    Investigating the Use of Conjunctions as Cohesive Devices in Writing among MBA Students Case Study: Sudan International University

    Abstract This study aims to investigate the use of conjunctions as cohesive devices in writing by Sudanese business students by using the taxonomy of cohesive relationship as provided by Halliday and Hassan (1976). This study uses a qualitative research method for data collection and analytical descriptive method for data analysis. The researcher has administered a written test consist of two sections at the sentence and the paragraph levels distributed to 48 MBA students from semester one at Sudan International University (SIU). The results reveal that students misuse conjunctions and are not competent of their types. The study also reveals that some types of conjunctions are used more frequently than the others and in some cases they do not use them at all. This study suggests some recommendations such as teachers of English language at universities should raise student’s awareness and knowledge about the use of conjunctions as cohesive devices. English departments at universities should introduce extensive excurses for conjunctions that focus on writing techniques and practice related to the proper use of conjunctions as grammatical cohesive devices.     SecondarySchool english Language Teachers And Their Role In The Deterioration Of The Standarrd Of English

    This study sets out to investigate Sudanese school English Language teacher and their role in the deterioration of the standard of English. A questionnaire was administered to 57 selected English language teachers based on convenient sampling techniques. Descriptive statistics techniques were used. The analysis revealed the 70% of the respondents agreed that they do not have sufficient salary which negatively affects their frustration in the teaching process and hence the learners achievement would become weaker and weaker, 50% of the respondents agreed that the absence of comfort factors will negatively impact on the leamers’ achievement in English, 60% of the respondents agreed that marginalization of teachers needs negatively affect students’ achievement in English, 50% of the respondents agreed that the absence of teachers rapport would negatively impact on the learners achievement in English and 80% of the respondents agreed that they are suffering a lot to find their living, a matter which affects their perfonnance inside the classroom.

    Investingating the lties in english collocations encountered by sudanes learnes of english at unvirsity levels

    ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to investigate the problems of collocations encotmtered by Sudanese learners of English. The general assumption is that Sudanese learners of English at university level do not know how to use collocations in their writing.Moreover, the syllabi taught to Sudanese university students four levels do not cover the area of collocations sufficiently. This study attempts to identify collocation errors in the students’ performance and suggest possible solutions to them. This is accomplished through several steps: (l) Choosing 40 final students in the department of English, Faculty of Arts, at Omdurman Ahlia University as subjects. (2) 17 instructors of English, who are all holders of different degrees in English language, answered the teachers ‘questionnaire. They all teach in the department of English in four Sudanese universities. a)University of Khartoum Faculty of Education. b) Al-Neelein university. C)Omdurman Ahlia university. d) Al-Ahfad university for Women. (3) Two instruments for data collection were used: (a) Students’ test and (b) teachers’ questionnaire.The data were statistically analyzed. The results of the investigation have revealed the following: 1. About half of the Students face a problem when using English idioms. 57.5%of their answers were incorrect and they rarely use idioms in their writing.46.5% of the students’ answers were incorrect when using collocations with verbs. They also make errors in collocations with adjectives. 59% is the percentage of their errors. Errors in collocations with nouns are more than 58% . 2. According to Al-Ahlia subjects’ register the syllabus used at the four levels does not focus on the area of collocations. 3. The structure of English phrasal verbs, and idioms sometimes causes collocation errors.

    Investigating the Misuse of English Articles among EFL Sudanese University Students

    Abstract This research investigates the misuse of English articles among Alneelain EFL students; the subjects of the study are 50 students of linglish language, Faculty of Arts at Alneelain University. The aim of the study is to find out whether there is a problem of using article or not. lt also finds out the reasons for the misuse of articles with regard to the students ol Alneelain University. The study also tries to produce and provide suitable strategies for the students to help them use articles correctly. The researcher has adopted the descriptive and analytical approach to accomplish the aims of the research. The researcher has collected the data of the study through a test. The results of the study reveal that first year students face problems of choosing the correct article when they produce pieces of writing in English. Another problem is that students have more problems of using the indefinite articles; i.e. when there are words that begin with "u" as we can see in words such as (unity), they use the indefinite (an).[Their claim is that the letter ’u’ is a vowel letter]. The student‘s misuse of English articles is also due to mother tongue interferences; since Arabic has only one article (dl =the indefinite article) and the (zero article) is the indefinite article. E.g. “There was sand everywhere“.The study recommends students to practice a number ol articles (reading and listening) to be aware of their use. It also recommends teachers to give more attention and effort on how tackle the roots of the problem of articles and show they differ in Arabic and English.

    Word-Formalion Processes in Standard English and Modern Standard Arabic: Contrastive Analysis Study

    This thesis focuses on analyzing and contrasting the process of word-formation in Modem Standard Arabic (MSA) and Standard English (SE) in order to reveal the similarities and differences between them and their potential productively for pedagogical purposes, and it is useful for native and non-native linguists. Word-formation is a problematic area of research, especially in Arabic language, because there are some processes that have no specific rules but there are exceptions followed, the data for this study has been collected from different sources, complied works and analyzed in terms of morphology, productivity and semantic indications of both SE and MSA. It has been found that Standard English and modern standard Arabic reveal similarities as well as differences. The similarities are found in some general universals, such as affixation compounding, blending onomatopoeia, borrowing, conversion and acronyms.

    مستخلص الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على سيدنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وبعد... تستهدف هذه الرسالة إلى دراسة الموضوعات ذات القاسم المشترك وهو عودة القيم والمبادئ على المنهج القرآني كما كانت في السابق ومن ثم تسليط الضوء على كيفية المنهج الإسلامي للمجتمع من الانحرافات التي طرأت عليه وسوف أتحدث بطرق أخرى تهدف لزعزعة واستقرار أمن الأسرة والمجتمع المسلم إن آيات القرآن الكريم والتي تستخلص من خلالها معرفة الدور الذي يقوم به منهج القرآن الكريم في إبراز القيم والمبادئ للحفاظ على النشء الإسلامي من الوقوع تحت وطأة الرزيلة وسوء الأخلاق و التربية. وتتكون هذه الرسالة من مقدمة وثلاثة فصول فيأتينا الفصل الأول شاملاً للسورة المباركة، أسبابها والظروف الملابسة لنزولها وأحوالها وتسليط الضوء على أهم خصائص وسمات المنهج الرباني، وفي الفصل الثاني: أظهر البحث منهج القرآن الكريم وعلاقته بما يفيد البشرية ويحميها من الوقوع تحت وطأة المحرمات والرذائل وقد تميز القرآن الكريم بشموليته لجوانب الإنسان ومكوناته المختلفة للحفاظ عليه من شر الأشرار وكيد الكائدين والفجار، ثم أشرت إلى أهم معالم المنهج القرآني لصون الألسنة ومحاربة الإشاعة وكيفية التعامل معها من خلال الأمور المستوحاة من السورة في قضية القذف واللعان وكيف تمت معالجة هذه القضية: كالطرق الوقائية والعلاجية، وبيان تركيز القرآن الكريم على حفظ الألسن وعدم الخوض في أعراض الناس. وفي الفصل الثالث: تأتينا قضية الاستئذان لحفظ البيوت وحرمتها من إظهار للمارة بالطرق أو الداخلين بغير إذن و تكلم المنهج الرباني فيه من الصيانة ما تحفظ به كرامة البيت وأهله من الداخلين عليهم، ثم تحدثت عن الحجاب وكيفيته. This thesis aims to study topics that have a common denominator, which is the return of values ​​and principles to the Qur’anic approach as they were in the past, and then to shed light on how the Islamic approach to society has deviated from the deviations that have occurred in it. Through it, knowledge of the role played by the Holy Qur’an curriculum is extracted in highlighting the values ​​and principles to preserve the Islamic youth from falling under the burden of vice, bad morals and education. This thesis consists of an introduction and three chapters, so we come to the first chapter inclusive of the blessed surah, its causes and the circumstances surrounding its revelation and its conditions and highlighting the most important characteristics and characteristics of the divine approach. The Noble Qur’an, in its comprehensiveness of human aspects and its various components, to protect it from the evil of the wicked and the plots of plotters and immoral people, then I referred to the most important features of the Qur’anic approach to safeguarding tongues and fighting rumours, and how to deal with them through matters inspired by the surah in the issue of slander and cursing, and how this issue was addressed: such as preventive and curative methods, And the statement of the focus of the Holy Qur'an on preserving the tongues and not delving into people's symptoms. And in the third chapter: the issue of asking permission to protect the houses and its prohibition from showing passers-by on the roads or those who enter without permission comes to us, and the divine approach in it talks about the preservation of the dignity of the house and its people from those who enter them, then I talked about the veil and its method.

    EFL Students Difficulties with some Irregular Transitive and Intransitive Verbs in Omdurman Islamic University

    Abstract Using transitive and intransitive verbs and their syntactic, semantic properties can act as the core of some sentences across English language. This study aimed at investigating and diagnosing the Sudanese EFL students’ problems with the use of irregular transitive and intransitive verbs. The descriptive, analytic research design was adopted in the study. A sample of 45 Students was tested in Omdurman Islamic University, so as to collect the quantitative data. The findings have shown that: 24% percent of the students answered the questions incorrect, 21% percent of students answered the questions correct and some students were encountered difficulties in using the transitive and intransitive verbs correct. المستخلص يمكن ان يعمل استخدام الافعال اللازمة و المتعدية وخصائص التشابك اللفظي كجوهر لبعض الجمل في اللغة الانجليزية. وتهدف هذه الدراسة الى استقصاء و تشخيص مشاكل طلاب اللغة الانجليزية كلغة اجنبية في استخدام الافعال اللازمة و المتعدية. وقد اعتمدت الدراسة على تصميم البحث الوصفي و التحليلي. تم اختبار عينة من 45 طالبا في جامعة امدرمان الاسلامية لجمع البيانات الاستشارية . اظهرت النتائج ان21% من الطلاب اجابو عن الاسئلة بصورة صحيحة. حيث واجه 24% من الطلاب صعوبات في استخدام الافعال الانتقالية و غير الانتقالية بصورة صحيحة.

    The Role of Using L1 in Teaching L2 among Al-Nelain University Students

    Abstract The role of using first language in teaching second language and its effect on students ‘performance if it negative or positive to use first language, linguistics have a different point of view ready or not those who said use they have first language tactics explain second language that make learning easy and quicker , another linguistics who agree with using L1 they have view that mother tongue is familiar and children are more comfortable with it because it use to communicate at home and street and best learn from simple to complex, known to unknown. The use of mother tongue have negative effect is rang transfer from first language to second language when the student has a confusion between two rules, grammar, morphology…etc. all these branches different from language to another for example in grammar structure of the sentence differ from Arabic to English in Arabic v –s–o(verb .Subject. Object) while in English s–v–o (Object .Subject. verb) so transfer from language to another is sensitive because when we translate, we must be careful in difference points in the two to avoid mistakes; those who said the use of mother tongue has positive effect depend on the theory said that mother tongue is familiar to student, so it make learning easy to translate from familiar to unfamiliar from known to unknown, the aim from this study is to search for the correct way teach second language to used first language or not and to know how student thinking and what is their opinion about using first language Target group: Descriptive analytical method through a questionnaire and related questions there are 50 students all of them answered all the questions in second year faculty of Arts English department in Alneelain University after they answered the researcher collected the data and analyzed it by SPSS program to see the hundred percent of their answers and how it play a big role in this arguments use of L1 or not to use and advantages and disadvantages and how they different in their opinion , but they agree in some points like practiced the second language strong skills listening , speaking specially in addition to correctly use reading also they agree in using second inside and outside the class and we learn second language just to exam but to all over like to be as a custom or a tradition to improve students’ performance, and also there are another factor that improve second language learning like age must begin in early age in the school. المستخلص دور إستخدام اللغة الأولي في تدريس اللغة الثانية وتأثيرها على أداء الطلاب اذا كان سلبياً أو ايجابياً في استخدامها ، فان اللغويين لديهم أوجه نظر مختلفة ، اولئك الذين يويدون استخدام اللغة الاولى لديهم تكتيكات تشرح اللغة الثانية وذلك يجعل تعلم اللغة الثانية سهل وسريع ، ولغوييون أخرون من الذين يويدون استخدام الغة الام يفيدون بان اللغة الأم هي اللغة المألوفة لدي الاطفال والاكثر راحة في استخدامها لأنها تستخدم في التواصل بين مجتمعهم فانهم يتعلمونها بشكل أفضل من البسيط الى المعقد ومن المعروف ولغير المعروف . استخدام اللغة الأم له تأثيرا سلبياً فى نقل اللغة من أولى إلى ثانية مثلاً عندما يكون لدى الطالب تطبيق قاعدة فى قواعد اللغة فى النحو، التراكيب ، ....الخ جميع هذه الفروع تختلف من لغة الى اخرى على سبيل المثال فى التركيب الجملة تختلف من اللغة العربية إلى الانجليزية ، فى اللغة العربية تتكون الجملة من V.S.O تعنى فعل . فاعل . مفعول به .اما فى الانجليزية فهى تتكون من S.V.O فاعل . فعل . مفعول به.لذا فان الانتقال من لغة الى لغة اخرى يكون حساساً فيستوجب الحذر فى نقاط الاختلاف تلافياً للاخطاء ، هؤلاء الذين قالوا إن استخدام اللغة الأم ايجابياً يعتمدون على نظرية أن اللغة الأم مالوفة بالنسبة للطالب مما يجعل تعلمها سهلاً لترجمة المألوف الى غير المألوف والمعروف إلى غير المعروف والهدف من هذه الدراسة هو البحث عن الطريقة الصحيحة فى تعلم اللغة الثانية ونظراً فى استخدام أو عدم استخدام اللغة الأم ومعرفة كيفية تفكير الطلاب ورأيهم فى استخدام اللغة الأم. منطقة الأستبيان : الطريقة التحليلية الوصفية من خلال الاستبيان وعلاقته بالاسئلة الموجه الى (50) طالب واجابة جميعهم على جميع الأسئلة من الفرقة الثانية كلية الأداب – قسم اللغة الانجليزية في جامعة النيلين بعد ان جاوبوا الاسئلة جمع الباحث المعلومات وحللها بواسطة برنامج SPSS لرؤية 100% من اجاباتهم وكيف تلعب دوراً كبيراً فى هذه الحجة على استخدام اللغة الاولى وعدم استخدامها وسلبياتها وايجابياتها وكيف يختلفون في وجهات النظر ولكنهم يتفقون في بعض النقاط كالتدرب على اللغة الثانية من خلال مهارات السماع والكلام خاصة بالأضافة الى استخدام القرءاة بشكل صحيح كما يتفقون على استخدام اللغة الثانية داخل وخارج الفصل الدراسي واننا لانتعلم اللغة الثانية للامتحان فقط ولكن لتصبح كعادة او جزء من التقليد ليتحسن اداء الطلاب وأيضا هنالك عوامل أخرى لتحسين تعلم اللغة الثانية كعامل العمر ، يجب أن نبداء دراستها فى سن مبكرة.

    The Relationship Between EFL Learners Self-Initiated Self-Repair and Motivation

    Abstract This study investigates the relationship between EFL learnes’ self-initiated self-repair and motivation, the research also aims to find out, how does self-initiated self-repair enhance motivation. The research hypothesized that: (1) there is a positive relation between self-initiated self-repair and student’s motivation (2) self-repair is expected to enhance motivation. To test the above hypotheses, the researcher adapted analytical and descriptive method data which obtained through a questionnaire were analyzed and critically discussed. The research reached the conclusion that leaving the student to repair their errors motivates them to learn English. The study found out that talking in class room built the student’s self-confidence. Also, the research shows that asking and answering the question in English motivate the student to learn English. So, the researcher strongly recommended that FFL learners errors need more attention ملخص البحث تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التحقق من العلاقة بين تصحيح الطالب الدارس للغة الانجليزية خطأه بنفسه والدوافع. هدف البحث لاكتشاف كيف يحفز تصحيح الطالب لخطأه تعلمه للغة الانجليزية. وقد قدمت الباحثة الفرضيات التالية (1) هناك علاقة طردية بين تصحيح الطالب لخطأه وبين الدافع. (2) تصحيح الأخطاء يعمل على تحفيز الطالب للتعلم، وللتحقق من هذه الفرضيات استخدمت الباحثة المنهج الكمى ثم جمع البيانات عن طريق الاستبيان . وقد توصلت الباحثة إلى النتائج التالية ترك الطالب ليقوم بتصحيح أخطاءه بنفسه يزيد من دافعه لتعلم اللغة الانجليزية ، كما توصلت الدراسة إلى أن : الكلام في الفصل يبنى ثقة الطالب بنفسه وأيضاً أظهرت الدراسة إن ترك الطالب يبادر بالإجابة والسؤال يحفزه لتعلم اللغة الانجليزية. خلصت الدراسة إلى أن أخطاء الطلاب الدارسين للغة الانجليزية تحتاج إلي مزيداً من الاهتمام.

    Analysis Of The Socio-Cultural Words In EFL Learns' Written Corpra: A Corpus-Based Approach

    ABSTRACT This dissertation is a contrastive pragmalinguistic analysis of two essays. The topic of the first essay is the ritual concepts of Eid –Al Fatter in Islamic World while the second essay talks about the traditional ceremonies of marriage in Iraq. The analysis is based on Coulthard’s Model (1989) that emphasizes that communicative competence with linguistic competence should combine with socio-competence to achieve successful communication. The underlying general aim of this work is to find out whether or not specific selected vocabularies found in these essays share certain common cross linguistic and pragmatic features with English version. Two hypotheses are proposed for testing this possibility which are: 1-The frequencies of the socio-cultural words in EFL learners' written corpora) which are used in the mother tongue) are expected to be high in number because of the difference in language and its whole root. 2- There is a significant effect of the socio-cultural in EFL learners' written corpora, which is that challenging to the teachers to develop the system teaching. A special model of analysis is adopted that is based on Coulthard (1989) and Newmark’s model (1988). The work rounds off with conclusion and suggestions for further researches. The conclusion shows that the Iraqi students suffer a lot when they translate vocabularies that are related to religious concepts. The same difficulty is generated in translation vocabularies associated with traditional marriage in Iraq. المستخلص هذه الأطروحة هي تحليل لغوي لمقالين مختلفتين من الناحية الدلالية. موضوع المقال الأول هو طقوس عيد الفطر في العالم الإسلامي ، في حين يتحدث المقال الثاني عن الاحتفالات التقليدية للزواج في العراق. يستند التحليل إلى نموذج كولتارد (1989) الذي يؤكد أن الكفاءة التواصلية مع الكفاءة اللغوية يجب أن تتحد مع الكفاءة الاجتماعية لتحقيق تواصل ناجح. الهدف العام الأساسي لهذا العمل هو معرفة ما إذا كانت المفردات المحددة الموجودة في هذه المقالات تشترك في بعض الميزات اللغوية والتداولية مع المفردات الانجليزية التي يستخدمها الطلبة العراقيون أم لا. تم اقتراح فرضيتين لاختبار هذا الاحتمال وهما: 1- من المتوقع أن تكون تكرارات الكلمات المحددة في المقالين لمجموعة المتعلمين للغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية والمستخدمة كما هي عالية العدد بسبب الاختلاف في اللغة وجذرها بالكامل. 2 - هناك تأثير كبير في المجال الاجتماعي الثقافي المكتوب لمتعلمي اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية ، وهو ما يمثل تحديا للمعلمين لتطوير نظام التدريس. تم تبني نموذج خاص للتحليل يعتمد على كولتارد (1989) ونموذج نيومارك (1988) لتحليل المقالين . يختتم العمل باستنتاج واقتراحات لمزيد من الدراسات بهذا الصدد. الاستنتاج يظهر أن الطلاب العراقيين يعانون كثيرًا عند ترجمة المفردات المتعلقة بالمفاهيم الدينية وتنشأ نفس الصعوبة في مفردات الترجمة المرتبطة بالزواج التقليدي في العراق.
