The research suggests many procedures and strategies that should be put in consideration so as to tackle this area. This study examines English language learners’ capacity to acquire and understand the various semantic denotations of English prepositions. The result of this study show that Sudanese students have syntactic and semantic difficulties in using certain types of English prepositions. The study revealed that the most problematic prepositions for Sudanese students are idiomatic prepositions and prepositional verbs. The causes for such errors are many, where the most frequent are the mother tongue interference. i A sample of 100 students was drawn from two different educational institutions namely, Khartoum and AlNeelain Universities-Faculties of Arts; English Departments during the year 1999. The results present no statistically significant difference in the performance of the students of these two universities. No effect of gender or age was also found in using English prepositions. Two instruments were administered to analyze the data collected for the purpose of the study : The first was a' questionnaire which collected data about the testees themselves. Such data were beneficial and valuable in analysis. The second was a five- part achievement test examining the hypotheses of the study. This test aimed at investigating both the semantics and syntax of English prepositions. The nine English prepositions investigated were: at, by, for, fi'0m, _1'n, of 011, to, with.Item AN ANALYTICAL STUDY OF NON-NATIVE ENGLISH TEACHERS’ PROBLEMS TO ACQUIRE ENGLISH LINGUISTIC & COMMUNICATIVE SKILLS & ITS EFFECTS ON SUDANESE STUDENTS »(Al-Neelain University, 2002) FARIDA HASAN HAMIDAlxslraet My aim is not to add anything to all that has already been said and written by myriads oliseholars and learned people in the lield oliteaelring English as a foreign language. To achieve this purpose, three tests in pronunciation were employed to produce primary data and to establish reasons why students commit these errors? The thesis model tests age, gender, interference and intralanguage. The results showed that the impact of the mother tongue in pronunciation acquisition is the main factor which influences English pronunciation followed by errors resulting from factors other than mother tongue i.e., intralingual errors. The study is divided into six chapters: Chapter one introduces the thesis and states the problem, the assumption, the objectives and the significance of the work. Chapter two focuses on the basic theories and hypotheses. Chapter three reviews the literature on error analysis in the domain of phonology. Chapter four presents the means of the data collection and introduces the subjects with detail information about pronunciation errors. It also defines and comments upon the questions of objectivity, reliability and validity. Chapter five explains and discusses the result of the test represented by tables and graphs followed by_a discussion and a visual representation in the form ol‘ figures and graphs to rapidly assess what problems the students may encounter. A Chapter six provides a summary of the study, and repeats the findings and giving suggestions for further research.Item Habit Transfer from L1 Reading to L2 Reading: An Investigation of the lmpact of Faulty Reading habits in L1 Reading on L2 Reading with special reference to sophomores and subvocalization at Omdurman Islamic University and Ahfad University College for Women as shown in second year University students.(Neelain University, 2003) MOHAMED NASr ali nasrABSTRACT he aimof the present study is to explore the impact of reading habits on University students to offer certain remedies and suggestions to deal with the situation. Considering the fact that good readers read fast and that reading fast depends on word recognition skill, students standard reading competence abilities have been investigated, and word and phrase recognition abilities, were highlighted in both L1 and L2. The study was based on the selection of a random sample of (110) Second Year University students (males and females) at English Language Depts. In Ahfad University College for women and Omdurman Islamic University,. Tests were designed to measure subjects standard reading competence - (Speed and comprehension) rates in both L1 and L2. Brief questionnaires were distributed to students in order to investigate certain reading strategies and habits that are known to play a role in the performance of slow poor readers. Questionnaires were given randomly to teachers/lecturers (all levels) on L1and L2 similarly interview questions were given to reader experts in order to highlight the role of the teacher in reading and promote teaching skills to overcome the weak parts of the implemented programme. The study revealed that subjects use certain faulty reading habits which affect reading competence adversely. The researcher has also indicated further research areas that may be needed to complete the study.Item FACTORS INFLUEN CING THE CHOICE OF STRUCTURES OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE(Alneelain University, 2003) TAHA MOI-IAMMED ZEIN A.. EL. WAI-IID A.. ALLAHThe goal of this thesis is to explore objectively the problems which Sudanese University students at Al-Neelain University encounter in choosing correct English structures; more precisely, problems in the choice of verbs, tense parallelism, verb-noun confusion, prepositions, nouns and pronouns. It is argued that the intralingual factors and mother-tongue (Sudanese Arabic) interference and the overgeneralization are the basic issues for the occurrence of errors. A test which was employed, was ofaready-made materials nature, to get primary data from answers to one essay of the examinations given to the fourth-year students in the English Department in the 2001/2002 academic year at Al-Neelain University, Khartoum, Sudan. The subjects of the study were 100 male and female students, chosen randomly from a total of 180 students. The findings of this thesis were very surprising although Ll interference is the main factor that caused errors, the number of intralinugal errors is relatively high. The study consists of five chapters. Chapter (1) is a representation of a general background, namely the statement of the problem, the hypothesis, the research questions, the significance of the study, the objectives of the study, the method of collecting data, and research outline. Chapter (2) gives the literature review and theory in the domain of the study. Chapter (3) manifests the methodology that was setup in the study. Chapter (4) comprises the data analysis and the results that were drawn from the discussions of the results, and chapter (5) provides the consequences and recommendations.Item The Relationships Between the Attitude of Ahfad University Student towards the University Curriculum and Their} Psycho Social Adjustment(Al Neelain University, 2003-04) Nadia Abdalla MohammedThis study of the relationships between the attitudes and adjustment among Ahfad students has four purposes, (1) To point out the correlation between attitudes of Ahfad university students towards the curriculum and adjustment; "(2) To know the effect of attitudes on students psychological adjustment; (3) To analyze the factors behind the negative and positive attitudes and maladjustment of Ahfad students; and (4) To show the difference among students attitudes and adjustment according to age, socioeconomic status and martial status. The descriptive approach is used. The methods used includes; the attitude of Ahfad university -students towards the university curriculum ‘scale and adjustment scale inaddition to the, Mann Whitney Test, T-Test, Spearman Correlation and Non Parametric Correlation. Results showed that; there is a positive correlation between the degree of Ahfad students’ attitudes towards the curriculum and adjustment; there are significant differences in the students’ psychological adjustment according to age and martial status; and Ahfad university students have favourable attitudes towards university curriculum. J Finally, suggestions and recommendations for future studies were mentioned.Item PHONOLOGICAL ERROR ANALYSIS OF THE Spoken ENGLISH OF AL-NEELAIN FOURTH-YEAR STUDENTS ( Remedial Study)(Al Neelain University, 2003-07) ABBAS EL-SIDDIG MDHAMMED AHMEDThis thesis aims to examine the pronunciation errors of spoken English of Al-Nelain University students. General observations also indicate that Sudanese students are weak listeners and that they use faulty listening habits that hinder accurate listening. The present study is an attempt to develop English listening skill. The study aims at investigating strategies for developing this skill. Moreover, it investigates certain faulty listening habits that hinder accurate and fast listening. The researcher has used the descriptive method. The study instrument is a questionnaire used to investigate certain listening strategies and habits that are known to be characteristics of good and competent listener. The questionnaire consists of the following categories. 1- The objectives ofteaching English listening. 2- The methods of teaching English listening. 3- The SPINE content. 4- The techniques of teaching English listening. 5- The teachers training and qualifications. 6- Evaluation of the students’ performance. The results show that there is little deficiency in the students’ listening ability. However, the study also shows that there are certain faulty listening habits that hinder accurate and fast listening. The researcher has recommended that secondary schools should be well equipped with teaching technology and the number of the students should match the classroom capacity.Item reading speed and comprehension(Neelain University, 2004) osman elamin abdulgadir elnurABSTRACT This research deals with reading speed and comprehension in English language as an (FL) compared with Arabic language as a mother tongue i.e. an (Ll). 100 students i.e. 25 students from each of the four schools in Doha basic and secondary levels, were subjected to experiments in reading speed and comprehension in both English and Arabic languages. 40 teachers were subjected to a questionnaire concerning their interest in the skills of reading speed and comprehension and whether they practice these skills with their students. The research is composed of six chapters that appear as follows: Chapter one includes the introduction, the hypotheses, the objectives, the questions, the problem, the significance and the limitation of the study. Chapter two includes the theories written by experts in the field of reading speed and comprehension. Chapter three shows the previous research on reading speed and comprehension which are totally connected with each other. It also shows how to improve these skills. Reading speed helps a fast reader find the material needed within a short time compared with a slow reader. Chapter four reviews the methods of data collection and statistical analyses based on the hypotheses set in chapter one. Chapter five includes the discussions of the data collected in chapter four and the results obtained from the experiments which were given to students of both levels. It also includes the confirmation of the already mentioned hypotheses. As a result the researcher has found that there is a close relation between speed and comprehension. He has found that fast readers comprehend reading texts better than slow ones and that the teachers do not put an emphasis on reading speed or even have any idea about it. Chapter six includes the results the researcher has come to after careful analysis and discussions. It also includes the implications, the recommendations and the conclusion. The researcher has recommended that syllabus designers should consider these skills in all levels when they design the syllabuses so that teachers can practice reading speed with their students.Item an analysis of the effect of mispronunciation on sudanese university students writing(Neelain University, 2004) fawzia elamin ibrahim abdel qaderABSTRACT (English Version ) The Analysis of the Effect of Mispronunciation on Sudanese University Students’ writing Performance The study aims at investigating and analyzing the effect of mispronunciation on the writing errors, which have been made by the fourth year students of English language Department - Faculty of Arts, at El Neelain University in the academic year (2000-2001).
