Abstract
This thesis focuses on analyzing and contrasting the process of
word-formation in Modem Standard Arabic (MSA) and Standard English
(SE) in order to reveal the similarities and differences between them and
their potential productively for pedagogical purposes, and it is useful for
native and non-native linguists.
Word-formation is a problematic area of research, especially in
Arabic language, because there are some processes that have no specific
rules but there are exceptions followed, the data for this study has been
collected from different sources, complied works and analyzed in terms
of morphology, productivity and semantic indications of both SE and
MSA.
It has been found that Standard English and modern standard Arabic
reveal similarities as well as differences. The similarities are found in
some general universals, such as affixation compounding, blending
onomatopoeia, borrowing, conversion and acronyms.
