(Neelain University, 2005) Abdelmonim Osman Abdelmonim Hamed
ABSTRACT The ethnopharmacologic approach was followed in the present research and the prescription for the treatment of Herpes zoster known as Shingles was handed by the herbalist Mr. Osman Abdelrnonim and consisted of an ointment prepared from the seeds of Lupinus termis and the leaves of Ambrosia maritima .The plants was identified and voucher specimens were deposited at MAPRI herbarimn , Khartoum . The study was conducted according to the following steps : (1) General phytochernical screening of the ethanolic extract of two plants indicated“ the presents of sterols, triterpenes, alkaloids, flavonoids, tarmins, saponins and sesquiterpene lactones only inA. maritima. (2) Pharmacologic screening of the two plants to study the effect of their extract on isolated tissues ( intestine , heart , aortic strip , uterus , vassodeifemts and rectus abdominis muscles of experimental animals rabbits , rats and fiogs ) , showed neither agonistic nor antagonistic efiect . (3) Clinical trials on patients to follow-up the therapeutic effect of the three ointrnents prepared : one containing a mixture of the two plants and the other two containing each plant separately . The study concluded that the ointment containing the extract of m Lupinus seeds was the most active followed by the second one containing the mixture of the two plants and that containing only Damsissa was the least active . It is recommended to employ the ointment composed of Lupinus seeds extract for treatment of Herpes zoster and to undertake future study to isolate the active constituent of the drug which is probably an alkaloid of the lupinane type .
