    Nurses' knowledge and Practice Regarding Suctioning of Mechanically Ventilated Patients in Military Hospital, 2017

    A procedure that deserves particular attention, given its direct relationship with the risk of infection, is the endotracheal aspiration (ETA) of intubated patients .The procedure, however, is not free of risks and complications, co-morbidities such as cardiac and/or respiratory failure, hemodynamic instability, and tracheobronchial injury. Methodology A descriptive, cross sectional, hospital based study was conducted, during the period from September to December 2015 among all (60) nurses working in the ICU at Omdurman Military hospital, aimed to assess nurses' knowledge and practice regarding suctioning of mechanically ventilated patients. Data was collected by a designed questionnaire and observational check list. Data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version (20) and data presented with tables and figurs. Results: Results revealed that nurses' knowledge regarding suctioning of ventilated patient was 54.9%, while their practice level regarding suctioning of ventilated patient was 50.5% . Conclusion: The study proved that nurses' Knowledge and practice regarding suctioning of ventilated patient in Omdurman Military hospital seems to be inadequate and it is recommended that workshops and training programs should be planned for nurses to improve their knowledge and practice.
