Item Quest for Identity in Francis Deng’s Cry of the Owl(2017) Abdalla Abbas EissaAbstract This study examines a very prominent theme in Postcolonial African Literature which is “Identity quest”. The exploration of such postcolonial writers as Deng in terms of depicting their cultural identities and of their people’s reveals the hybrid culture of the postcolonial societies and writers. These writers discuss the influence of decolonization, hybridity, language, culture, religion, and displacement movement on postcolonial dilemma. Their attempt is an attempt to reconstruct Identity or to reinvent a new one. The researcher uses a qualitative method to analyse and investigate the issue of identity in South Sudanese society through reading Deng’s “Cry of the Owl” from psych analytical perspective. The researcher tries to discuss how Deng views and deals with the identity question and the way he dealt with the main components that influence identity quest in his work. More importantly, the study focuses on how South Sudanese lost their identity; culture, language and religion. The study finds out that the missionaries have a strong impact on the loss of their identity. Moreover, the findings reveal that Arabisation and Islamisation affect their identity negatively. مستخـلص البحــث تناقش هذه الدراسة موضوعاً هاما ً و ماثلاً في الأدب الإفريقي لفترة مابعد الاستعمار , حيث أنها تتعلق بقضية البحث عن الهوية . لقد كان ظهور كُّتاب فترة ما بعد الاستعمار مثل الدكتور/ فرانسيس دينق و تصويرهم للهوية الثقافية لشعوبهم أدى الى الكشف عن الثقافة الهجينة المتنوعة لمجتمعات فترة ما بعد الاستعمار . أيضاًناقش هؤلاء الكُّتاب التأثير والفراغ الذي سببه المستعمر لافريقيا من حيث التهجين الذي أصاب اللغات والثقافات و الأديان وحركات النزوح كذلك الفوضى والحيرة التي أعقبت ذلك , و تلخصت محاولاتهم في إعادة بناء الهوية او إبتكار هوية جديدة . و يستخدم الباحث في هذه الدراسة اسلوب التحليل النوعي في تحقيق الموضوع الذي يتعلق بماهية الهوية في مجتمعات جنوب السودان من خلال إستلهام رواية الدكتور فرانسيس دينق (نعيب البومة) من زاوية التحليل النفسي . كذلك يحاول الباحث أيضاً أن يصّور و يناقش كيفية رؤية الدكتور دينق للقضية و الطريقة التي يتعامل بها الدكتور مع المكونات الأساسية التي تؤثر على قضية البحث عن الهوية في دراسته , و من الأهمية بمكان أن تشير الى أن الدراسة تركز على كيفية فقدان شعوب جنوب السودان لهوياتهم ولهجاتهم وثقافاتهم و كذلك معتقداتهم . و أوضحت الدراسة التأثير القوي للديانات التبشيرية في فقدان هذه الهوية و كشفت عن تأثير معطيات التعريب والأسلمة سلبياً على الهوية الجنوبية .Item The Significance of the Socio -affective factors in enhancing EFL pronunciation : A case study of Basic Education Learners(2016) Hanaa Elatta MohammedAbstract This study attempts to investingate the Socio affective factors , and their impact on , EFL learners pronunciation. To answer the question of the study , Three hypotheses have been set. fifty teachers participated in answering the questionnaires. The data of the study has been obtained through a questionnaire. The data was then manipulated by the statistical package for social science (SPSS) and then analyzed and discussed in ample detail. The study focues on the correlation between English pronunciation achievement and Socio affective factors. The findings suggests that learner's formal class room , fear of losing self - identity and belief of language difficulties are the main sources of Socio affective factors in EFL learners pronunciation Based on the findings and implications of this study. Learners and teachers can increase their awareness of Socio affective factors in enhancing EFL learner pronunciation. Accordingly , better ways of dealing with Socio factors can be adapted , an enjoyable and effective Language - learning environment can therefore be developed.Item The T Production of English Vowel Sounds Contrasted to Arabic Vowel Sounds(2012) Zahra DanaAbstract It is known that foreign language learners often struggle to accurately pronounce unfamiliar sounds in the target language. This study under the title of "The production of English vowel sounds contrasted to Arabic vowel sounds: A case study of Al Neelain third year EFL majors' pronunciation problems", investigates the difficulties Sudanese third year students of English language at Al Neelain University face in producing English vowel sounds. This study contrasts Arabic and English vowel sounds in order to identify the differences between these two vocalic systems. These differences are considered to be the chief source of difficulties for the students. The effect of mother tongue interference on pronunciation is also examined in this study. The experimental and Analytical model of methodology is followed to undertake this study and the data are collected through the written and oral experiments. Forty five Sudanese third year EFL students at Al Neelain University who are native speakers of Arabic and undergone the same background studies have been chosen as subjects to participate in these experiments. The results of the experiments reveal that the significant numbers of the students mispronounce and misidentify the vowels that do not have Arabic counterparts. They face difficulty, for example, in producing long vowels /Ǥ:/, /Ǭ:/, and /ǡ:/, short vowels /Ǣ/, /Ț/, /æ/, /Ȝ/ and /ə/, and the diphthongs which glide to /ə/ and those which glide to /Ț/. Whereas, the vowels that are similar to Arabic ones do not pose serious problems for the student to pronounce. The results show also that the student substitute the vowel /Ț/ for /u:/, /ǡ:/ for /æ/, /Ǥ:/ for /Ǣ/ and /Ȝ/ for /Ǣ/ in many contexts. The reasons for this erroneous iv pronunciation, in researcher point of view, could be: the differences between Arabic and English vowel sounds in terms of quality and quantity, the mother tongue interference, inconsistence between spelling and pronunciation, and students' inadequate knowledge about English articulation system. At the end, the researcher suggests conducting further researches in this area that investigate the effect of other factors, such as, the syllabus, the number of students in the classroom, the teaching hours and competency of English teachers, on English pronunciation. The researcher recommends providing universities with language labs with Multimedia to improve students' production and perception of English vowel sounds.
