    A SONOGRAPHIC STUDY OF KIDNEY DIMENSTIONS AMONG ADULT SUDANESE PEOPLE

    ABSTRACT Objective: In order to establish some preliminary data in concern of the kidney in our population, an ultrasonography study was performed to detect the renal dimensions. I assessed whether age, sex, and presence or absence of diabetes mellitus and renal diseases affect the renal size. Methods: ultrasonography concerning kidney measurements were performed on 84 adult patients(for the period from December 2016 to May 2017). Measurements included length, width, thickness and estimation of renal size which was obtained by multiplying the first three variables. The effect of age, gender, direction, height, weight, renal diseases and diabetes mellitus was statistically analyzed. Results: It was found that themean kidney length was 10.2 ±1.2 cm, mean width was 5.2 +0.9 cm and mean thickness was 3.25 ± 0.8 cm.The kidney length, width and thickness were not affectedby age. There was a marked but not significant difference of kidney length,width, thickness between males and females. Thedata showed strong correlation between length, width, thickness and BMI in the right kidney but no correlation in the left kidney. Thedata showed a strong correlation between lengths, width, and thickness of right kidney with length, width, thickness of left kidney. The history of disease of patient (renal diseases and diabetes mellitus) were found to be not significant factors affecting renal size. Conclusion: • In this study, the kidney length, width, thicknesses were not affected with age. • There is amarked but not significant difference of kidney width and thickness with gender except the thickness of the right kidney. • Thedata showed strong correlation between length, width, thickness and BMI in the right kidney but no correlation in the left kidney. • The data showed a strong correlation between length, width, and cortical thickness of right kidney with length, width, thickness of left kidney. • The history of disease of patient (renal diseases and diabetes mellitus) were found to be not significant factors affecting renal size. • All variables assessed in this study, the most significant factors associated with the kidney size were sex, and size of the left kidney with size of right kidney. خلاصة الأطروحة الهدف : هو أنشاء بعض البيانات الأولية للسودانيين، وتحديد الأبعاد الطبيعية للكلي في الأفراد باستخدام الموجات فوق الصوتية . قمت بتقييم ما أذا كان العمر والجنس، والجانب مؤشر كتلة الجسم ومرض السكري وأمراض الكلي الأخرى لها تأثير علي حجم الكلي. أجريت قياسات الكلي بالموجاتفوق الصوتية علي 84 من المرضي البالغين للفترة من ديسمبر 2016م إلى مايو 2017م. الطريقة شملت قياسات الطول، العرض، وسمك القشرة وتقدير حجم الكلي الذي تم الحصول عليه عن طريق تقدير المتغيرات الثلاثة الأولي. أما تأثير العمر والجنس والجانب والطول والوزن ومؤشر كتلة الجسم، وأمراض الكلي ومرض السكري علي حجم الكلي فقد تم ذلك عن طريق التحليل الإحصائي . النتائج: كان متوسط الطول الكلي 1.2 + 10.2سم والعرض 0.9 + 5.2سم وسمك القشرية 0.8 + 3.25سم. طول الكلي، العرض وسمك القشرة لم تتأثر مع التقدم في السن. اتضح وجود فرق ولكن ليس كبيراً بين طول، عرض وسمك القشرة الكليبين الجنسين. لقد وجدت علاقة قوية بين طول، عرض وسمك القشرة للكلية اليمنى ومع طول، عرض وسمك القشرة بالكلية اليسرى. تظهر البيانات وجود علاقة قوية بين طول، وعرض وسمك القشرة للكلية اليمني مع طول، عرض وسمك القشرة للكلية اليسرى. أوضحت هذه الدراسة أن تاريخ المرض فيما يختصبوجود مرض كلوي أو داء السكري لا تؤثر علي حجم الكلي رغم أهميتها. الاستنتاج:-  هذه الدراسة توضح عدم وجود علاقة بين حجم الكلي والعمر.  هناك فرق ملحوظ ولكن ليس كبيراً في حجم الكلي بين الجنسين باستثناء سمك الكلي اليمني.  أظهرت البيانات المتوفرة لدينا وجود علاقة قوية بين الحجم مؤشر كتلة الجسم اليمني ولكن لا علاقة لها مع الكلية اليسرى.  أظهرت البيانات المتوفرة لدينا وجود علاقة قوية بين حجم الكلية اليمني مع حجم الكلية اليسرى.  وجد أن تاريخ مرض الكلي والسكري عوامل لا تؤثر علي حجم الكلي.  من كل المتغيرات المدرجة في دراستنا، أهم العوامل المرتبطة مع حجم الكلي هي الجنس، مؤشر كتلة الجسم وعلاقة حجم الكلية اليمني مع حجم الكلية اليسري.
