Item Assessment of Immunohistochemical Expression of Intracellular Adhesion Molecule-1 among Sudanese patients with Thyroid Cancer(Al-Neelain University, 2021-11) Rabab Hussein Sir Elkhatim MokhtarAbstract Background: Thyroid cancer (TC) is one of the most common cancers in Sudan. It has many histological types with different plan of treatment and prognosis.Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (ICAM-1) could serve as a marker for more precise diagnosis and characterization of this disease and consequently precise management. Aim: The study aimed to assess the expression of ICAM-1 in different thyroid diseases using immunohistochemical technique. Materials and methods: This is a descriptive retrospective study, which was conducted at Omdurman teaching hospital during the period from March to June 2020.Sixty –formalin fixed paraffin embedded Thyroid biopsies were retrieved from the archive of the histopathology laboratory at Omdurman teaching hospital from January 2014 to December 2017. The presence of ICAM-1 was detected by immunohistochemistry. The association between ICAM-1expression and thyroid diseases was tested by Chai-squire test. Results: Sixty patients were enrolled in this study. (11; 18.3%) were male and (49; 81.7%) were female. The age of the studied patients ranged from 11to 85, the mean age was –41years. 25(41.6%) of the samples were benign, while 35(58.4%) were malignant. Among benign samples 17 (68%) patients were multinodular goiter, 4(16%) were Hashimoto's thyroiditis and 4(16%) were follicular adenoma. And among the malignancy samples, papillary thyroid carcinoma was the leading 18(51.4%), followed by follicular thyroid carcinoma 11(31.4%), followed by medullary thyroid carcinoma 4(11.4%) and the least type of thyroid malignancies was anaplastic 2(5.7%). ICAM-1 expression was retrospectively investigated in the above mentioned cases using immunohistochemical analysis. ICAM-1 was not detected in benign cases, but was frequently expressed in thyroid carcinoma. PTC 6/18 (33.3%) were positive, FTC5/11(45%), MTC 1/4 (25%) and ATC2/2(100%). (P. Value
