Abstract
Abstract
Background: allo-immunization against red blood cells was tested
among Sudanese multiparous women. The study was conducted on
randomly selected 130 pregnant ladies, majority were attending Soba
teaching hospital whereas the remaining were attending Khartoum
teaching hospital during the period February-2008 and May-2008.
Aim: the aim of this study was to detect the frequency and type of
allo-antibodies, thus highlighting the importance of performing
antibody screening and identification in our blood banks in Sudan.
Samples and methods: samples were collected from pregnant ladies.
Each sample was ABO Rh (D) grouped and screened for allo-
antibodies, then samples that gave positive antibody screening were
tested for antibody identification using gel agglutination method.
Results: red cell allo-antibodies were found in 14 cases (10.8%). The
identified antibodies were anti Le“ 4 (28.6%), anti C" 2 (14.3%), anti E 2
(14.3%), anti S 1 (7.1%) and 5 (35.7%) were difficult to interpret
whether they are anti Kell or anti Lub. Also the results revealed that,
no significant relation was found between age, ethnic group, and
presence of allo-antibodies. Also insignificant relation was found
between history of red cell transfusion and allo-immunization; this
may be for the small number of tested ladies. ‘A significant relation
was observed between history of abortion, number of pregnancies and
presence of allo-antibodies.
Conclusion: antibody screening should be performed for all pregnant
ladies. '
