Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the contamination rate of various water sources by parasites in Ombada locality, Khartoum state.
In this study, 212 water samples were collected from various water sources (106 drinking sources and 106 washing water sources ).Water samples were processed by tincture iodine wet preparation, Modified ZN staining technique and saturated salt flotation technique.
The result showed that out of 212 water samples, 33 were found positive for parasites. This constituted an overall contamination rate of 15.5%. The study revealed that the rate of contamination with parasites was 2.3% among drinking water while it was 13.2% among washing water sources. The highest contamination rate (40.7%) was reported in the rocket washing water, while the lowest contamination rate (10%) was reported in zeer drinking water.
The prevalence rate of different parasites was as follow:
Giardia lamblia cyst (5.2%), Cryptosporidium parvum oocyst (2.8%), Entamoeba histolytica cyst (1.9%), strongyloides stercoralis larvae (2.3%), Ascaris lumbericoides egg (0.9%), Entamoeba coli cyst (1.9%) and Hymenolepis nana egg (0.5%).
The rate of intestinal protozoa (11.8%) was higher than the rate of intestinal helminthes (3.7%).
