Assessment of Calcium and Magnesium among Endemic Goiter Patients in South Kordufan

Abstract

Studies approved the association between endemic goiter and change in calcium and magnesium level. therefore aim of this study was to assess calcium and magnesium concentration among Endemic goiter patients in South Kordufan state. In case control study 40 clinically diagnosed endemic goitre patients age ranged from 12 to 60 years old, and 40 health apparently as control group were enrolled. Serum TSH, fT3, fT4 were measured using sandwich and competitive immunochemistry assays, while calcium and magnesium concentration measured by means of atomic absorption. Data was analyzed statistically by using SPSS. This study revealed that, endemic goiter is common in females than males with 39:1 fold. This study also provide evidence that, there was significant decrease in mean level of TSH in endemic goiter patients when compared with control group withP-value = 0.560.The results of the study showed that, the mean concentration of the thyroid hormones (FT3 and FT4) were significantly differ in case and control, with p value 0.043 and 0.049 respectively. The study provides evidence that, mean plasma calcium was significantly increased in study group with p-value 0.000, while mean plasma magnesium level was significantly lower in patients with goiter in comparison with control group with p-value 0.000. The study also revealed that there was no significant correlation between serum calcium and magnesium withparticipants age, moreover there was no correlation showed between serum calcium, fT3, fT4 and TSH. Also no correlation observed between serum magnesium and TSH.In addition there was positive correlation between serum magnesium , fT3 and fT4. Finally the study suggested that, goiter subjects in Southern Kordufan had higher calcium and lower magnesium level. Moreover positive associations are observed between magnesium, fT3 and fT4.
