A study of Entamoeba gingivalis in the genital tracts of ladies attending a family planning clinic in Omdurman – Khartoum State

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to assess occurrence of E. gingivalis in the genital tracts of ladies attending a family planning clinic in the city of Omdurman. Fifty samples in the form of vaginal scraping specimens were collected from women patients of a different age ranging from less than 20-50 years, Information was collected in designed questionnaire each was numbered and the relevant information was entered including (age, previous or present, Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device "IUCD" use, suffering from UTI, bleeding and dental disease). Samples from The 50 genital sampling were stained and examined under microscope .They showed that 15 case (30%) were positive for E. gingivalis 11 case (73.%) were found positive for periodontitis,. E. gingivalis was 33% in >25, 13.3% among 25-30) , 33.3% for (30-35) 6.7% for (40-45), positive and (45-50) were 13.3%. .Infection was more associated with the users of IUCD Among the positive E. gengivalis, 5 cases (33.3%) were in use of IUCD, 3 cases (20%) already removed IUCD with bleeding, 3 cases (20%) were suffering from mild and acute inflammation) in genital tract associated with discharge and infection and a dominant alkaline PH. Among the ladies included in this investigation a total of 44 (88%) patients of permanent or periodical use of IUCD. Those in use 0-2 years were 50% (25), 3-5 years were 46% (23) and 6 years and more was 4%. The study showed that E. gengivalis in genital tract is associated with dental disease and had a significant link with the use of contraceptive device.
