Cryptosporidiosis among Renal Transplant Patients at Ahmed Gassim Hospital

Abstract

Abstract During the period April-June 2010, 50 stool specimens have been obtained from renal transplanted patients from renal transplanted unit in Ahmad Gassim Hospital in Khartoum state. The patients included in the study use different types of immune suppressive drugs, group of paragraph with different doses, 1-10mg, 11- 20mg,and the other group cyclosporine50-75mg, 76-100mg. The study aimed to detect cryptosporidiosis among renal transplanted patients, the result showed that 21(42%) of patients were positive. The study revealed that there was strong co-relation between diarrhea and cryptosporidiosis infection. This appeared in that positive patients with diarrhea constituted 64% of the cases. Every stool specimen had been collected into clean, dry, tied stool containers. These specimens were processed by formal ether concentration technique, and then faecal smears were prepared and fixing by using ethyl alcohol and stained with modified ZN stain. The faecal smears were examined under light microscope using objective X100. The results showed that 21 samples were positive and 29 were negative. This reflects the efficacy of ZN stain detection of cryptosporidiosis infection.
