Tear Quantity and Outer Eye Disorders in the Patients with Chronic Renal Failure Undergoing Hemodialysis

Abstract
Aim: To evaluate the tear quantity and outer eye disorders in the patients with chronic renal failure who undergoing hemodialysis.
Material and Methods: A comparative cross sectional hospital based study was done in Khartoum State at Omdurman Military Medical Hospital and Abdulrahman Salih Sabderat Centre in the period from April to June 2017. Schirmer test paper was used to evaluate the tear quantity, stop watch was used to adjust time when assessing the tear quantity, outer eye was examined by a torch and hand held magnifier, the collected data was analyzed by SPSS 20.
Results: A total of 100 subjects (100 eyes) was investigated, the study group were 50 patients with renal failure; 56% males and 44% females their age was ranged between (20-45) with mean 33.18±7.34 years, while the control group(50 subjects) 38% of them were males and 62% were females. Their age range was (20-44) with a mean 30±8.94 years. Sixty two percent of the patients with renal failure were complain of different symptoms (itching 45%, blur in vision 22%, discharge 20%, unable to see at night 2%, lacrimation 22%, redness 4%, ocular pain 2%, headache 2%), 86% had outer eye disorders (pterygiumwithredness2%, redness 2%, redness and yellow conjunctiva 32%,yellow conjunctiva50%). There was a significant difference when comparing the mean of tear quantity between study group 16.3±8.75 and the control group 17.7±6.40, P value 0.000.
Conclusion: Chronic renal failure disease leads to eye dryness and outer eye disorder. Hence proximate observation is necessary for those patients.
