Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the constituents and mineral contents available in two types of dates grown in Sudan which are Gondella and Brakawi. The study revealed that the Sudanese dates contain different types of minerals and different concentrations of these minerals. The Barakawi type contains a high level of calcium. It contains 12.32 mg/100g while the Gondaila content of calcium was found to be 9.17 mg/100g, Potassium was found in Sudanese dates in abundant. Barakawi content of potassium is higher than its content in Gondaila. It is 249.35 mg/100g. In Gondaila its content of potassium was 182.36 mg/100g by using flame photometer. Magnesium content in Gondaila was found to be 29.4 mg/100g. In Brakawi it is 16.44 mg/100g. The Iron content in Gondaila was 1.12 mg/100g while in Brakawi 1.17 mg/100g by using Atomic absorbance spectrometry. The content of phosphorus is higher in Gondaila and it exceeds the content of phosphorus in Barakawi, phosphorus content in Gondaila was found to be as 198 mg/100g. In Barakawi it is 140 mg/100g by using Spectrophotometer. Having these contents of nutritive elements the Sudanese dates is considered as an important source of the essential mineral for the nutrition of humans.
