dc.description.abstractAbstract Background: Ventilator associated Pneumonia is the most common noso-comial infection in critically ill patients who require mechanical ventilation and it is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in intensive care units that accounts 47% of infections in the intensive care unit. Objective: To assess nurses’ competences regarding prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia Methodology: It was descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study, conducted at Omdurman military Hospital, during the period from December 2019 to October 2020, consisted of (100) nurses working in intensive care unit from whom the data was collected using close-end questionnaire to assess knowledge and the observation checklist to evalute practices then the data were analyzed by using statistical package for social sciences , version 26, in form of frequency and percentage and presented in form of table for more group comparison we used Chi-Square significant as p-value S 0.05. Results: Generally the nurses had poor knowledge (35.8%) about mechanical ventilator. Regarding ventilator associated pneumonia they had good knowledge regarding oral rout of endo-tracheal intubation (84.5%), Fair knowledge regarding definition, cause pathogen, changing ventilator circuit, and type and fiequency of humidifier ( 50%,), and poor regarding characteristic, frequency of oral care and nursing care to prevent it (33.0%). Regarding practice they only properly do hand washing (92.0%). Nurses had poor practices regarding prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia (4l,6 %). On other hand there were significant relationship between qualification, experience and nurses knowledge regarding prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia (p value = 0.04). significant relationship between experience and nurses practice p value 0.02 and insignificant between qualification and practice (p value 50.5). Conclusion: the researcher concluded that nurses have poor knowledge and practice regarding the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (V AP). And recommend the important of training of nurses inservice and outside to improve their knowledge and practices.en_US
