Abstract
Abstract
Background: Ventilator associated Pneumonia is the most common noso-comial infection in
critically ill patients who require mechanical ventilation and it is an important cause of morbidity
and mortality in intensive care units that accounts 47% of infections in the intensive care unit.
Objective: To assess nurses’ competences regarding prevention of ventilator associated
pneumonia
Methodology: It was descriptive cross-sectional hospital-based study, conducted at
Omdurman military Hospital, during the period from December 2019 to October 2020,
consisted of (100) nurses working in intensive care unit from whom the data was collected
using close-end questionnaire to assess knowledge and the observation checklist to evalute
practices then the data were analyzed by using statistical package for social sciences , version
26, in form of frequency and percentage and presented in form of table for more group
comparison we used Chi-Square significant as p-value S 0.05.
Results: Generally the nurses had poor knowledge (35.8%) about mechanical ventilator.
Regarding ventilator associated pneumonia they had good knowledge regarding oral rout of
endo-tracheal intubation (84.5%), Fair knowledge regarding definition, cause pathogen,
changing ventilator circuit, and type and fiequency of humidifier ( 50%,), and poor regarding
characteristic, frequency of oral care and nursing care to prevent it (33.0%). Regarding practice
they only properly do hand washing (92.0%).
Nurses had poor practices regarding prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia (4l,6 %). On
other hand there were significant relationship between qualification, experience and nurses
knowledge regarding prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia (p value = 0.04). significant
relationship between experience and nurses practice p value 0.02 and insignificant between
qualification and practice (p value 50.5).
Conclusion: the researcher concluded that nurses have poor knowledge and practice regarding
the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (V AP). And recommend the important of
training of nurses inservice and outside to improve their knowledge and practices.
