Effect of Cigarette Smoking on the Complete Blood Cell Count and Serum Iron Level among Sudanese individuals

Abstract

ABSTRACT Background Cigarette smoking contributes to the development or progression of numerous chronic and agerelated disease processes. One major risk factor for morbidity and mortality among smokers is cardiovascular disease and lung cancer. Hematological abnormalities have been associated with coronary heart disease and other oxidative damage at the tissue levels increasing in age is significantly associated with abnormal haematological parameters Objective to study the Effect of Cigarette Smoking on the Complete Blood Cell Count and Serum Iron Level among apparently healthy Sudanese individuals. sample and methods 40 blood samples were collected from smokers volunteers, 50 blood samples were collected from healthy nonsmoker volunteers. This study investigates the Complete Blood Cell Count by Sysmex KX-21N and Serum Iron by mindray BS-200. Results The result of this study showed the mean of the WBC, HCT, MCV, Mixed ,PDW ,MPV ,PLCR and serum iron of the Cigarette Smoking were significantly higher as compared to nonsmoker control group (P value 0.005,0.017, 0.017, 0.007, 0.002, 0.001, 0.000 and 0.000) V respectively . While the relative Neutrophil count was significantly low in smokers as compared to non-smokers (P value.002); and RBC, HB, MCH, MCHC, PLT, Lymphocyte and RDW did not show any significant difference. The results of correlation of the study parameters and the age and the duration of smoking and number of cigarette per day of the smokers showed no statistical significant correlation between age of smokers and the duration of smoking and number of cigarette per day and study parameters (P value >0.05). Conclusion: In summary we conclude that the cigarette smoking increase the level of WBC, HCT, MCV, Mixed, PDW, MPV, P-LCR and serum iron and decreases neutrophil and these changes are not influenced by the age and number of cigarettes per day and duration of smoking in cigarette smoking individuals . الخلاصه الخلفيه: يعتبر تدخين السجائر ذات صله بالعديد من الامراض العمريه ويعد واحد من عوامل الانتشار لامراض القلب وسرطان الرئه . التغيرات الدمويه ذات صله مع امراض القلب وزياده التكسر الاكسيدي في مستوى الخلايا ذات علاقه احصائيه مع الدم الغير طبيعي. الھدف من الدراسه: لدراسه تاثير تدخين السجائر في صورة الدم الكامله و الحديد المصل بين الأفراد السودانيين الذين يبدو أنھم أصحاء. العينه والطرق: تم جمع 40 عينه دم من المتطوعين المدخنين، تم جمع 50 عينه دم من المتطوعين غير المدخنين صحي. تم استكمال عدد .mindray BS- والحديد المصل بواسطة 200 Sysmex KX-21N خلايا الدم باستخدام النتائج: من serum iron و P-LCR,MPV, PDW, Mixed, MCV, HCT ,WBC أظھرت نتائج ھذه الدراسة ان متوسط (P value 0.005,0.017, 0.017, تدخين السجائر كان اعلى بكثير بالمقارنه مع مجموعه السيطره غير المدخنه , 0.007 منخفضه بشكل ملحوظ Neutrophil 0.002 على التوالي، في حين كان العدلات النسبية لل , 0.001, 0.000 and 0.000) RBC, HB, MCH, MCHC, PLT, Lymphocyte and و (P value. في المدخنين بالمقارنه مع غير المدخن ( 002 لم تظھر أي فرق كبير. RDW اظھرت نتائج ارتباط معلمات الدراسه والعمر ومدة التدخين وعدد السجائر يوميا للمدخنين عدم وجود علاقه ارتباط احصائيه .(P value > معنويه بين المدخنين ومده التدخين وعدد السجائر يوميا ومعلمه الدراسه ( 0.
