dc.description.abstractThe efficacy of Agnique [isosteaiyl alcohol] was tested under laboratory and field conditions against Anopheles arabiensis and Culex quinquefasciatus . Agnique forms a thin mono molecular film on the water surface , and hence the name (Agnique MMF) .The formation of the monomolecular film alters the surface tension and thus disturb behavioral and developmental attributes of immature stages of mosquitoes. Under laboratory conditions Agnique l\/[MF was detrimental to larvae and pupae of both Anarabiensis and Cx. quinquefasciatus species .In both species the pupae were more sensitive to Agnique than larvae . Under field conditions , Agnique MMF was tested only against 3"‘ -4“ instar larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus .Field application gave >80% control of larvae at the three dose rates : O.25,1.0 and 4.0 ml/m2 ; 48 hrs post treatment . The residual effect of Agnique MMF was tested also in comparison with temephos (abate) and fenthion which are recommended organophosphorus larvicides in mosquito control programs .The results indicated that Agnique MMF was effective against mosquitoe larvae and pupae for more that one week . No detrimental effects on non-target organisms such as : Gambusia aflinis , dragon fly nymph and amphipoda were observed . Water quality parameters like pH , electronic conductance , temperature and dissolved oxygen were not affected by Agnique in any negative waen_US
