Assessment of Serum Copper Level among Sudanese Cataract Patients

Abstract

Abstract Background:A cataract a common pathological abnormality of the lens, is a cloudy or opaque area in the normally clear lens of the eye leading to a decrease in vision. Trace elements such as copper and zinc are associated with this disease. Objective: assessment of serumcopper levelin cataract patients. Materials and Methods :This study was performed at Mecca Eye Complex in Khartoum state during the period from January to February 2021. Eighty subjects was enrolled in the study then classified into 40 cataract patient age ranged between 30to70 years old, and 40 apparently health as control match group.The serum was diluted with de ionized water in the tube, and the copper standard was prepared by diluted the stock standard solution with 5 %( v/v) glycerol, then the analysis was performed against standard by 210/211 VGP atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Results:The study revealed that the mean level of copper was significantly lower in cataract patients group (0.21± 0.066) when compared to control group. In correlation analysis, copper show no significant correlation with age (r= -.039, p= .734) and gender(r= -.014, p= .902). Conclusion: The study showed that there were significant lower of copper in case group compare with control groupand therewas no significant correlation with study variables.

الخلفية:إعتام عدسة العين هو خلل مرضى شائع في العدسة ’ وهو منطقه ضبابيه او معتمة في عدسة العين الشفافة بشكل طبيعي مما يؤدي إلي انخفاض في الرؤية. ترتبط العناصرالنزرة مثل النحاس والزنك بهذا المرض. الهدف:تقييم مستوى النحاس في الدم لدى مرضى إعتام عدسة العين. المواد و الطرق:أجريت هذه الدراسة بولاية الخرطوم بمجمع مكة للعيون خلال الفترة من يناير إلي فبراير2021 تم تسجيل 80 عينة في الدراسةتراوحت أعمارهم من 30الي 70 سنة ثم تم تصنيفهم الى 40 مرضى إعتام عدسة العين,و40متطوعا أصحاء كمجموعات ضابطة . تم تخفيف المصل بالماء المؤوين في الأنبوب ,وتم تحضير المعيارالنحاسي بتخفيف المحلول المعياري للمخزون بنسبة 5% ( حجم/حجم) من الجلسرين,ثم تم أجراء التحليل بالمقياس الطيفي للامتصاص الذري. النتائج:أوضحت هذه الدراسة أن متوسط مستوى النحاس انخفض معنويا في مجموعة مرضىإعتام عدسة العين (0.21=0.06 )بالمقارنة مع المجموعة الضابطة.ومع ذلك,لم يكن هناك فرق كبير في متوسط العمر بين المجموعتين (قيمةالاحتمال0.5 ). في تحليل الارتباط ,لا يظهر النحاس أي ارتباط معنوي بالمتغيرات. الخلاصة:أوضحت الدراسة وجود انخفاض معنوي في متوسط النحاس لدى مجموعة مرضى إعتام عدسة العين مقارنة مع المجموعة الضابطة ولم يكن هناكارتباط معنوي بالمتغيرات.
