Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was on the effect of university environment on academic and administrative performance, taking the Faculty of Commerce and Economic and Social Studies, University of Al Nelain as a case during the period 2001-2005 as a time frame. The objectives of the study were to define the effect of the university environment on the levels of academic and administrative performance, and to study the current situation at the Faculty of Commerce and Economic and Social Studies, University of Al Nelain. The research problem was reflected in high increase in the numbers of students at the faculty in view of fixed other components of the intemal envirorunent that was negatively reflected on administrative and academic caliber. The researcher used quantitive techniques besides a case study. He used four structured questionnaires in collecting data from the different strata of the sampled community. r The study was presented in five chapters. The first one described the general layout of the study presenting the research problem, the research hypotheses and the methodology followed besides a brief review of previous studies in this field. The second chapter contained the theoretical framework of the study and relevant literature review. It also encompassed definitions of university envirorunent, its components and internal and external variables. Furthermore, this chapter also included a note on higher education and the universities goals and missions, besides a brief note on the policies of higher education in some developed countries. The third chapter contained a brief note on higher education in Sudan and on the University of Al Nelain, its establishment, goals and progress,

whereas the fourth chapter was on the research methodology and the research findings. In this regard, the researcher used descriptive statistics in presenting the results. The field study contained a sample of 600 individuals representing the four strata of the studied community. The student came up with a number of findings. The main results were that the university environment had a direct correlation with the levels of academic and administrative performance, and there were a number of weaknesses in the current environment of the Faculty of Commerce and Economic and Social Studies of the University of Al Nelain. Some of these weaknesses were deficiencies in capacities and contents of lecture theatres, computer laboratories and libraries to match the ever-increasing numbers of students. Furthermore, the working force of academic and administrative staff was insufficient. Based on these findings, the researcher stated several recommendations, the most important ones were that keen efforts should be undertaken to improve the intemal enviromnent of the faculty and to avail sufficient academic and administrative staff with well equipped offices that help in improving performance.
