Prevalence of the Absence of Palmaris longus Muscle Among Medical Students at Omdurman Islamic University (2013 -2014)

Abstract

ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to measure the prevalence of absence of Palmaris longus muscle among Medical students at Omdurman Islamic University , plamaris longus muscle is a dispensable with a long tendon which is very useful in reconstructive surgery . the methodology of this study is a descriptive cross sectional study. The sample size was 327 , it was present in 84.71% and absent in 15.29% . Its absence was more prevalent in the left side than the right side and more in females than in males . It was found concluded that the figures among Sudanese people is nearly identical to the internationally cited figures , and the researcher recommended further studies that considers the multiethnicity and the sample size . Also the aims of the present study were therefore to determine the prevalence of unilateral and bilateral absence of palmaris longus muscle among students in medical schools based in Lagos state and to also evaluate the associations between palmaris longus muscle agenesis and sex of the subject, as well as side of the limb . مستخلص الدراسة الهدف من هذه الدراسة هو قياس مدى غياب الراحي الطويلة بين طلاب الطب في جامعة أم درمان الإسلامية . عضله الراحه الطويله ذات الوتر الطويل مفيد جدا في الجراحة الترميميةز منهجية هذه الدراسة هي دراسة مقطعية وصفية . حجم العينة هو 723 . وكان وجود العضله حاضرا في ) 17.38 ٪( وغيابها في ) 82.21 ٪(، غيابها أكثر انتشارا في الجانب الأيسر من الجانب الأيمن وأكثر في الإناث منها في الذكور. فلقد خلص إلى أن الأرقام بين الشعب السوداني هي متطابقة تقريبا للأرقام المذكورة دوليا. و أوصى بإجراء مزيد من الدراسات آخذه في الاعتبار العرقيه وحجم العينة .
