Evaluation of the quality of some brands of fortified infant formulas-milk based-fortified with iron and folic acid

Abstract

Abstract The study was undertaken to know the chemical characteristics of fortified infant formula and determine their components and types. This study attempted to highlight the importance of breast feeding benefits and causes which lead to the use of fortified infant formula (milk based). In this study 17 samples from 4 international trademarks of infant formula, were subjected to chemical analysis including(moisture, fat content, protein, iron, phosphorus, folic acid and vitamin C) using different methods analysis including classical method such as titration methodand instrumental such as uv-vis spectrophotometer and HPLC(high performance liquid chromatography). The average of results obtained of each component which were compared with International and Gulf standards include moisture(2.74%) , fat(4.79 Kcal), protein(11.05%), iron(8.65mg/100g), vitamin C(42.78mg/100g), phosphorus(278.06 mg/100g), and folic acid(45.94µg ̸ 100g) ملخص البحث أجريت هذه الدراسة لمعرفة الخصائص الكيميائية لألبان الأطفال المدعمة وقياس مكوناتها وانواعها, وقد حاولت هذه الدراسه تسليط الضوء على أهمية الرضاعه الطبيعيه وعن اهم الاسباب التى تؤدى لاستخدام ألبان صناعيه. علية تم أخذ عينات عشوائية استهدفت أربعة ماركات مختلفة في مجمل 17 عينة وتم إجراء التحاليل الكيميائية لها متمثله في الرطوبة ,محتوى الدهن, البروتين,الحديد, الفسفور, حمض الفوليك وفيتامين (ج) باستخدام تقنيات مختلفه تشمل الطرق القديمه متمثله فى طرق المعايره وتحاليل الاجهزه وتشمل جهاز مطياف الاشعه فوق البنفسجيه والمرئيه و جهاز كروماتوغرافيا السائل عالي الاداء. وأوضحت النتائج مدى جودة العينات بعد مقارنها بالمواصفات الخليجيه والعالمية , وكانت متوسط النتائج كالاتى الرطوبه(2.74%), الدهن(4.79 KCal), البروتين11.05%), ), الحديد(8.65mg/100g) , فيتامين ج(42.78mg/100g), الفسفور(278.06 mg/100g, حمض الفوليك µg ̸100g)45.94.(
