Abstract

Abstract—A preliminary surveillance was conducted for investigation of internal parasites of captive black backed Jackal (Canis mesomelas) in Kuku Zoo. The methods used were direct smear and floatation tests of the faecal material of the jackal. Both methods revealed almost, similar results. Order of parasitic prevalence was: Toxocaris sp (38.67%) ; Coccidia sp (28.58%); Echinococcus sp (19.35%); and Taenia sp (6.45%); Guardia (3.22%); Toxoplasma sp (3.22%); Trichuis (3.22%); and Ascaris (3.22%). It is recommended that carnivores and herbivores in the zoo should receive similar investigation procedures routinely.
