    ASPECTS OF MODALITY IN STANDARD ENGLISH AND MODERN STANDARD ARABIC

    ABSTRACT aseecrs O1~"’MO»DfiaLlTY at srM\rD»aR.D~ ENGLLSH arm MODERN srattntaan» aaa~.s,tc The topic of this study is the notion of modality in standard (British) English and modem standard Arabic (henceforth to be referred to as English and Arabic respectively). The present study comprises Six chapters: Chapter One (introduction) is a brief introductory chapter that signifies the nature of the problem, and discusses the hypothesis, and the aim of the study. At the end of the chapter definitions ofthe following terms given: English, Arabic and modality. Chapter Two of the dissertation offers a detailed description of modality in certain English constructions. Chapter Three presents some basic issues that have bearing on modality in Arabic. Chapter Four presents a comparative analysis ofmodality in both languages in an attempt to locate the points ofsimilarity and difference between English and Arabic in this area. Chapter Five is devoted to the identification, classification and explanation ofthe students’ errors and their sources . The study ends with Chapter Six which summarizes the findings of the study , the recommendations and the suggestions for further study . \

    دراسة ظاهرة تعاطي المخدرات والاتجار فيها في العاصمة القومية

    Abstract This study aimed to recognize the demographic, social, economic_al and behavioural characteristics of the group of drugs traders and consumers in the National Capital (Khartoum - Khartoum North — Omdunnan). The sample of the study is (200) persons of the drugs traders and consumers fi'om Copper Prison, Omdurman Prison, Gireif Priso11 as well as mental hospitals such as Copper and Tijani Al-Mahi mental hospitals and the psychiatric department at the Military Hospital. Another group of the drug dealers those who were 11ot yet subject to punishment by law represented another sample for the study. Both of these two samples were studied through survey questionnaire method. Descriptive as well as analytical statistical method logies are used ill this research endeavor. The study revealed the following results: - (1)Tllere are statistical differences between the drugs dealers and consumers ill favour of the males. ~ (2)There are statistical differences between the educational level and dealing with drugs, for those W110 are illiterates or even received primary education only, are considered to be large percentage of the drug dealers. ’ (3)1-lashish is the favourite drug for the dealers. (4)There are statistical differences between the dealers and their residence, for it appeared that most of the drug dealers inhabit Omdurman. (5) The age group varying between 21-40 years is the large group dealing in drugs. __ (6)It seemed that family disintegration, polygamy and divorce are considered to be main reasons leading to deal with drugs.
