Item Ascertainment of Students and Teachers' Perception towards the Effectiveness of English as a University Requirement at Al-Neelain University(2015) Abdullah Araby Hassan ElnourAbstract This study investigates Ascertainment of Students and Teachers' Perception towards the Effectiveness of English as a University Requirement. A mixed method of research design is adopted. A questionnaire is distributed to a sample of 150 second-year Neelain University students to collect primary data. An interview is designed for 5 tutors of English as a university requirement. The data is analyzed via SPSS descriptive statistic method. The findings show that the students have negative attitudes towards English as a university required course. In addition, the English course is designed according to assumed previous knowledge of the students, not according to the actual needs of the students. Moreover, students’ misunderstanding of the term (requirement) discourages them to learn, they lack motivation as they think requirement subjects are not important simply because they are not related to their field of specialization. Finally, the number of students in the classroom is very large.
