Some of the products may be harmless, but others contain potentially hazardous ingredients such as inorganic mercury compounds. These products are often applied to large areas of the skin, left on the skin for hours at a time, and used repeatedly for weeks, months or years. In this study, fifty samples of cosmetic products were analyzed for total mercury by Direct Mercury Analyzer and Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. The concentration of mercury in the creams ranged from 0.017 - 93.70 μg/g. forty percent (40%) of the samples contain mercury with high concentration above standard of World Health Organization (WHO) 1μg/g. The use of such creams may lead to health hazards and significant risks to users. Fifty eight percent (58%) of creams contain mercury levels lower than the recommended WHO limit of 1μg/g. Two percent (2%) no mercury was detected. No warning information was noted on the packaging. pH of the fifty samples ranged from 3to 11. 34% of the sample studied had pH which is acidic (3-5), 58% is slightly acidic (5-7) and 8% is basic (7-11). Mercury absorbed through the skin from lightening products can damage the skin itself, the kidneys, and the nervous system. Therefore, it is recommended that all skin-lightening creams should be checked for mercury levels before marketing and educates consumers about the hazards they pose. (58%) من العيناتتحتوىعلىالزئبقبتركيزاقلمنالحدالاقصىالموصىبهمنظمة الصحة العالمية(1 مايكرجرام /جرام).
