Item clinical Evaluation of Sudanese Lupinus termis root and seed extracts used in treatment of Skin Diseases By: Abdelmonim Osman(2016) Abdelmonim Osman Abdelmonim HamidAbstract The roots and seeds of Lupinuus termis L., a leguminous plant of great potential in northern Sudan and native to the mediterranean basin was investigated phytochemically and assessed for its antimicrobial activity. Phytochemical, pharmacological and clinical investigations based on ethnopharmacologic approach recommended the use of the seed ethanolic extract as a safe herbal remedy in treatment programs of shingles. Two different morphological parts (root and seed) of L.termis L. were successively extracted with petroleum ether chloroform and methanol. The extracts were tested for their antimicrobial activity against four bacterial standard organisms (Bacillus subtilis, Escherchia coli, Pseudomnas aeruginosa and Staphylococus aureus) and two standard fungi (Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans). The methanolic extract of the roots showed the highest activity. Alkaloids, sterols, triterpenes, saponins, carbohydrates, flavonoids and tannins were detected in the prepared extracts. The root methanolic extract which showed the highest antimicrobial activity, was investigated by Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and subjected to Column Chromatography monitored with TLC. Based on these results the methanolic extract was investigated for its lipid profile as well as the quinolizidine alkaloid profile. The GC-MS analysis showed that the oil was composed mainly of Oleamide (43.1%); hydrocarbons (26.2%); fatty alcohols (15.8%) and fatty acids (09.58%). The semi-purified alkaloid methanolic extract was composed mainly of lupanine (72%); 13-hydroxylupanine (6.6%); sparteine (4.6%); ammodendrine (3.8%) and 13-Methoxylupanine (2.5%); Angustifoline (1.3%); Aphylline (1.62%); Baptifoline (2.29%). Clinical evaluation of the seed extract on 65 cases of the Herpes zoster disease (shingles) and 60 cases of eczema disease, gave the following results: Good response was reported for 46 (82.1%) shingles patients and 43 (80.8%) eczema patients showed good response. The new findings were reported in the current literature and could be considered as a new addition to the global data base programs.
