Using Buffering Algorithm to Improve HTTP Streaming Quality
(جامعة النيلين - مجلة الدراسات العليا, 2018-10-15) Dr\ Shazali Siddig Mohmmed; Muaz Abdullah Mohammed Osman
The Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) as an application-level protocol for distributed, collaborative, hypermedia information systems have been successfully overcoming the issues which used to pose great difficulty for the World-Wide Web users in formatting and transmitting the multimedia messages since 1990. The issues of similar and fairer quality of the contents of these multimedia messages accessed by the internet users sitting at different places across the globe, remains a big concern. As such there is an emergent need to create a buffer that will solve these issues in multimedia streaming resulting in improved experience of viewing videos by users connecting through different servers with different wavelengths across the globe. In this background, a paper was undertaken to enhance a Buffer based algorithms that will improve and enhance the quality of video viewing by the users accessing through different platforms. The said buffer has been given the name HAS. HAS, as a buffer-based algorithm, has been tested in a real practical setting with excellent results. This paper article presents the working model of HAS buffer application along with the empirical evidences undertaken in its testing. In the process of creating solution to the problems outlined in the paper, there were various steps followed to reach the optimal beneficial result. The first step was the examination of the current technologies available for viewing videos and the challenges that the technologies imposed on the users, this helped in the formulation of the paper problem. Second step was the examination of adaptive bitrate and the effects it has on the operations of HAS, the detailed study of the same entailed examination of various factors such as bitrate streaming and HTTP streaming, HTTP streaming the current services that make use of adaptive bitrate streaming and the future services that would employ the use of adaptive bitrate streaming. The third step was the development and formulation of the bitrate adaption algorithm which involved the design of the
