Another reason for that choice is the richness of his poetry and its representation of the nation’s hopes, his being frank, bold, and totally void of the hypocrisy that was the general characteristic of poets of his era. His poetry also represents a characteristic trait in the poetry of the region at that time. I classified his poetry in accordance with causes and issues that he raised, regardless of the subject of a given poem. A poem may tackle multiple purposes. However, the study deals -with the subject matter and ideas dealt with in a poem. The study is divided into four chapters. The first chapter covers his genealogy and early life, personal characteristics and the impact" otthe social, political and cultural life on his poetry. The second chapter deals with subjects oF'his poetry; in their personal, national, Islamic and international realms. The third chapter tackles his varying poetical purposes in the traditional classification ofzuhcl (asceticism), rathaaa (elegiac), macleeh (panegyrical), hijaa (clel’amatory), ghazal (love), and governance and politics. The fourth chapter is a study of the characteristics of his poetry. The research reviews poem "form, his wording, signil’ication, style, images and music in his poetry. The study also ranks the poet amongst others, and conducts a comparison between him andanumber o‘l’ot'her poets. ll also pinpoints poet’s slips; listing some grammatical and prosodic mistakes that appear in his ‘Nidaa el Khhaleej’ (Call of the Gull’) collection olpoems. An abstract, recommendations and a listot‘ret‘erences (in alphabetical order) conclude this chapter.الشعر العربيسالم بن علي العويس : حياته وشعرهThesis
