The World Health Organization estimate that approximately 1,000 women globally die every day due to complications from pregnancy or delivery. Competent midwives are in a key position to provide quality care during first stage of labor resulting in decreasing maternal mortality and morbidity. Objective: To study the midwives’ competency toward management of first stage of labor. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional hospital base study done at Omdurman maternity hospital to assess competency of 80 nurse midwives regarding management of first stage of labor during the period from (September2018-May 2019) using structure questionnaire and observation check list through total coverage, Data analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16 , and presented in frequency tables and figure. Results: Majority of Midwives are with midwifery school certificate, participant showing excellent behavior with average (90%), good knowledge with average (60%) but poor practice in management of first stage of labor presented by (33%).Conclusion: Despite the excellent behavior and good knowledge of midwives they had poor practice. Recommendation: The researcher recommended for manager of Omdurman maternity hospital provision of in-service training to enhance the midwives’ performance. مستخلص الدراسة المقدمة: المرحلة الأولى هي في الغالب أطول مراحل المخاض؛ ومن المؤكدحدوث المضاعفات المختلفة فيها . تقدر منظمة الصحة العالمية أن ما يقرب من 1000 امرأة على مستوى العالمتموت كل يوم بسبب مضاعفات الحمل أو الولادة. للقابلات ذوات الكفاءة موقع رئيسي في توفير الرعاية التمريضية ذات الجودة خلال المرحلة الأولى من المخاض مما يؤدي إلى انخفاض معدل وفيات الأمهات.الهدف: تقييم كفاءة القابلات تجاه الرعاية في المرحلة الأولى من المخاض.الطريقة: دراسة وصفية مقطعية أجريت في مستشفى أم درمان للولادة لتقييم كفاءة 80 قابلة فيما يتعلق برعاية المرحلة الأولى من المخاض خلال الفترة من (سبتمبر2018 إلي مايو 2019) باستخدام الاستبيان المعدل وقائمة التحقق من خلال إجمالي التغطية لمجتمع الدراسة ، تم تحليل البيانات باستخدام الحزمة الإحصائية للعلوم الاجتماعية (SPSS) الإصدار 16 ؛ وتم عرضها في هيئة جداول التردد والأشكال.النتائج: أكثر من نصف القابلات يحملن شهادة في مدرسة القبالة ويظهرن سلوكًا ممتازًا ومعرفة جيدة لكن ضعيفات في الممارسة العملية لرعاية المرحلة الاولي من المخاض.الخلاصة: على الرغم من السلوك الممتاز والمعرفة الجيدة للقابلاتالا ان الممارسة لديهن ضعيفة.التوصيات: اهم الوصايا المدير مستشفى أم درمان للولادة توفير التدريب أثناء الخدمة لتحسين أداء القابلاتNursing Scienceobstetrical and gynecologicalThesis
