Abstract

abstract This research studies philology in the fourth century of the l-ligra with special relierence to phonetics. The researcher studies most of the available reference ofthe 4"‘ centuiy on phonetics. The researcher found that all the information dispersed in books on Grammar (Nahw), rhetoric and dictionaries concerning phonetics are included in the book titled (Sir sina’t Ali’rab). _ There"Fore, the researcher extracted the phonetics contents appeared in the introduction of the book. The researcher compiled an introductory chapter in the book and the “Abulfath Osman Jini”. The study also tackled current researches on phonetics specially the parts related to phonetics content studied by the ancient scholars with reference to “Sir Sinat Ali-’rab” . Since modern phonetics could not be studied in the chapter, the researcher concentrated on the parts studied by IbnJini in his book. The researcher has also compared between ancient and modern studies on phonetics and concluded with the following:- l.Ancient scholars have studied most ofthe phonetics topics appeared in modern time. 2.Arabs did not pay due attention to over structural phonetics such as intonation, rythme and syllable in their present structure. Same scholars have slightly mentioned them such as lbn .lini in his book “Alkhas’ais”. 3.Modern studies are more comprehensive than the old ones because of the availability of devices that aid modern scholars. 4.DifFerence between ancient and modern scholars is so limited that due to development of utterance organs of man and absence ofdevices in the ancient times.
