Abstract

(Abstract) The research has tackled the geographical features to establish the governorate of Halabja in Kurdistan region, Iraq. The research aims to highlight the geographical features of all kinds, both human and natural potentials that the area is full of. The researcher uses several methods, as follows: The Descriptive method, The Analytical method, The Functional method, and the Historical method relied on the Primary and Secondary sources. The researcher used Microsoft Excel to analyze the data in details and geographic information system to preparing the maps . The research has many results that the area of Halabja — by its geographical features - can be a good reason behind the social and economic development in the area; thus, those features represent reasonable grounds to establish the new governorate. The most important of them are: The geographical terrains of the area render its climate very decent for the daily human activities and agriculture. Therefore it's located on the plain of Shahrazor which really matters to the agriculture. Nonetheless it's also rich in all kinds of water resources. The Geological structure and the strategic location

are also one of the reasons behind the establishment. The beautiful weather and the landscapes encourage tourism. The social and economic infrastructure like the history and the political location between the Iraqi cities and Kurdistan also help the city throughout the history. The study recommended allocating a special budget from the Iraqi and the region government to rehabilitate the destroyed area and focusing on reconstructing the infrastructure, drilling for oil, and try to make decent economic relationships with neighboring areas. The study also recommends focusing on agricultural development through the agricultural product's processing factories which are already available in the area.
