Abstract
The study aimed at evaluating an English language text book named
“New English File” - (Beginner Student’s Book), as a text book for the
Vocational Training Centers in Khartoum Estate. Two instruments were used
for the evaluation of the textbook. The first was a questionnaire distributed to all
course teachers in vocational training centers in Khartoum Estate (12 teachers in
four centers) to elicit their perspectives about the book. The questionnaire
consisted of 26 items to cover physical appearance and format of the book, the
contents, the cultural context of the book material and the illustrative drawings,
pictures and diagrams. The questionnaire was considered satisfactory for the
purpose by language specialists from English language departments in three
reputable Sudanese universities. The second instrument was a paired
comparison test to a total of 59 students. This was pre- and post- tests for the
students to evaluate the effect of the course on developing their language skills.
