Abstract

Abstract Republic of the Sudan Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research University of Nilein Faculty of Postgraduate Studies — Faculty of Arts Department of Libraries and Information Title: Online Public Access Catalog in the Sudanese Libraries Researcher: Lubna Abdel Magid Supervisor: Dr. Fadul Abdel Rahim Abdullah For Master Degree 2012 This Study discusses the current status of the Online Public Access Catalog and endeavors improving it to occupy an advanced place among the industrial countries in this aspect. The researcher followed the historical method to focus on the background of the topic. The survey method was applied to classify the Online Public Access service at the Sudanese libraries, and the policies that govern this kind of service by these libraries. The researcher selected three determined samples — specialized Academic University libraries — for applying this study. The researcher also used the method of content analysis to analyze (300) registered bibliography, previously prepared by the libraries, the core of study, in order to test the quality of the available catalog data for users at these libraries. The Main Results: All these Libraries are governed by Local Circuit Access except the library of Arabic Agriculture Organization. The service in local and by the Internet. With the exception of University of Science and Technology, there is a relevant shortage of working staff at these libraries. Recommendations: As a result of this study the researcher recommends that all libraries in the Sudan should use online service instead of the traditional catalog. Sufficient Number of working staff in the library at the cataloging department will help to improve service of using catalog among local libraries and international ones. Training cadres for direct catalog service is essential. It is also important to make them aware of the used terminology to make the search processes easy and simple.
