The effect of-classroom climate and family
variables on the achievement of the tenth grade
student in mathematics in the schools of north
Palestine
This study aimed at investigating the effect of classroom climate on
academic achievement in mathematics of the tenth grade students.
This would be accomplished through recognising the extent of a
difference in the achievement of the tenth grade students in mathematics
subject due to zthe differences in classroom climate ;the interaction
between the student sex and the classroom climate gthe classroom climate
dimension classified in zinvolvement ,aff1liation ,teacher support,task
orientation,organization,rule clarity and punishment and reward, and due
to the interaction between the student sex and these dimensions.
Also this study aimed at identifying family variables (family
income ,parents< level of education ,family size, parents working ,the
extent of parents concern in school affairs ,the extent of the existence of
family integration and Li1Q___pLln1i)6l‘ of fathers wives on the academic
achievement in mathematics . I
The sample of the study consisted of (l ~ ~)male and(\ ~ ~) female
students,the sample was intentionally selected from the tenth graders
students devided into tenth sections ,(°) for male , (°) for female during
the school year T~ ~ l/* ~ ~ Y .
To achieve the purpose of the study ,the researcher prepared three
tools ;(a)the classroom climate scale which includes (Y5) items covering
seven dimensions of the classroom climatezinvolvement ,aff1liation
,teacher support,task orientation,organization,rule clarity and punishment
and reward,(b)- the questionnaire about the family variables,(c) an
achievement test in mathematics.
The validity of the content of three scales was approved by an
assessment committee .The reliability coefficient was calculated for
(classroom climate scale ,achievement test ) by half- split method
was( ~ ,/W) for the first and(- »/\‘l) for the second ,while it was (~»/*1) for
the parentes concern in school affairs scale as used .
To test these-hypotheses of the study ,the researcher used descriptive
and analytical statistical techniques such as the means,standard
deviations,raw frequencies ,also _a two —way analysis of variance was
conducted on both students achievement and sex.Post —hoc comparisons
were the then utilized to point out the sources of significant differences
,and it was used a one —way anova and (ti) test for independent pairs .
The result of this study showed that there were significant statistical
differences at level(ot=~ Y - °) due to the classroom climate .Achievement
was increased when atenth grade student moved from lower classroom
Lclimate group to medium group and to ahiger group.These defferences
comparisons were calculated by using Newman-Keuls test ,by these
results indicated that there was a difference of statistical among the means
of achievement of most student groups which resulted from interaction
between sex and classroom climate .To "find the resources of these
differences ,the poistoron comparisons were made by using Newman-
Keuls test The results indicated that there were differences that had
statistical significance between most of the groups exept for males and
females of high classroom climate group .
The results of the two — way analysis variance also reveald that there
are statistically significant differences due to both the effect of each
dimension of classroom climate on achievement and the shared effect of
sex and the dimension of (involvement,affiliation,task
orientation,organization,rule clarity,punishment and reward).Where as
there were no statistically significant differences due to the shared effect
of sex and the dimension of (teacher support).
The one way anova analysis resulting from (T) and (F ) tests
indicated the existence of statistical impact for the variables of( parents
working ,family income,_parents level education and parents concern in
school affairs ). while the study did not show any statistical impact of
other studied variables .
In the light of these results ,the researcher has recommended the
need of patents corporation with school so as to participate in dealing with
the students weakness in mathematics ,and to provide suitable classroom
climate on all educational levels .In adittion ,the researcher has
recommended similar further studies on other samples of populations in
Palestine.
