The problem of Using Prefix and Suffix A case study of First year English Language Students (Al Neelain University)

Abstract

Recent research in English language, reflects Problem of using prefixes and suffixes as a difficulty for foreign students who study English.

The researcher suggests many procedures and strategies that should be put in consideration so as to tackle this area. The study examines English language learners capacity to use and understand various prefixes and suffixes of English and detect the problems.

The results of this study show that Sudanese students have difficulty in using certain types of prefixes and suffixes. It shows that the most problematic area for Sudanese students are prefixes. The causes for such errors are many, where the most frequent are the lack of practice or vocabulary and change of word-class. A sample of 40 students was drawn from Al NeelainUniversity, faculty of Arts, English language Department during the year 2013 sat a test .

The results present difference in the performance of the students using prefixes and suffixes at Al Neelain University. No effect of gender or age was also found in using prefixes and suffixes

One instrument is administrated to analyze the data collected for the purpose of the study. The test consist of two parts achievement test examining students of using prefixes and suffixes in their correct position.

تشير هذه الدراسة إلى البادئات واللاحقات كإحدى المشاكل التى تعوق تعلم الطلاب الأجانب للغة الإنجليزية على أكمل وجه. كما تقترح العديد من الوسائل والإجراءات التى يجب وضعها فى الحسبان للتغلب على هذه المشكلة. أيضا تناقش الدراسة مقدرة دارسى اللغة الإنجليزية على إستخدام وفهم مختلف البادئات واللاحقات فى اللغة الإنجليزية. أوضحت الدراسة أن الطلاب السودانيين يواجهون العديد من الصعوبات فى إستخدام بعض أنماط البادئات واللاحقات ، وكشفت الدراسة أن اكثر هذه الأنماط صعوبة بالنسبة لهؤلاء الطلاب هى البادئات. هنالك العديد من الأسباب التى تؤدى إلى مثل هذه الأخطاء من أبرزها، نقص المفردات والتغير الذي يطرأ على أجزاء الكلام.

أجريت الدراسة على عينة من الطلاب مكونة من 40 طالبا من دارسى اللغة الإنجليزية من كلية الآداب فى جامعة النيلين خلال العام الجامعى 2013.

وأشارت النتائج إلى وجود إختلاف فيما يتعلق بإداء الطلاب للبادئات واللاحقات، كما لم يكن لعاملى العمر والنوع أى تأثير فى هذا المجال. تم تشكيل وسيلة لتحقيق إهداف الدراسة هى: ورقة إمتحان مكونة من جزئين من أجل إختبار الطلاب فى إستخدام البادئات واللاحقات فى مواضعها الصحيحة .
