An Investigation into the Structural Errors of Arab Learners’ Writing Persuasive Discourse in English (A Case Study of 3rd year EFL Students' Errors in The Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Al-Neelain University,)

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the structural errors made by Sudanese EFL learners’ written persuasive discourse in English. The population of this study was third year students studying English as a foreign language at the Faculty of Arts, AL-Neelain University, Department of English. 40 studentswere chosen from third year. The researcher used a diagnostic test for data collection tool. The test was administered for the students and they were asked to write a persuasive text. The results of the test were analyzed statistically. The findings of the study showed that the students in general, lack the capacity to persuade the audience in their writing. Most learners were unable to use the text structure correctly. The study also showed that students lack techniques such as persuasive devices, cohesion, paragraphing, sentence structure, punctuation and spelling. مستخلص الدراسة تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى تقصي أخطاء البناء اللغوي لدى الطلاب السودانيين الذين يدرسون اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية عند كتابة التعبير.مجتمع الدراسة يتمثل في طلاب المستوى الثالث في كلية الآداب جامعة النيلين، شعبة اللغة الإنجليزية ويدرسون اللغة الإنجليزية كلغة أجنبية.تم اختيار أربعين طالباً منالمستوى الثالث لإجراء الاختبار التشخيصي.استخدم الباحثالاختبار التشخيصي كوسيلة لجمع البيانات.طُلب من الطلاب كتابة تعبير جدلي لمعرفة مقدرتهم على ذلك. تم تحليل نتائج الاختبار عن طريق التحليل الإحصائي. لقد توصلت نتائج التحليل إلى الآتي: طلاب الصف الثالث بصفة عامة يفتقرون إلى إقناع الجمهور في كتاباتهم، أغلب الطلاب غير قادرين على استخدام النص بصورة سليمة، هناك غياب في التعبير عن الفكرة عند الكتابة، أغلب الطلاب غير قادرين على استخدام الإقناع عن كتابة التعبير الجدلي، بعض المفردات المستخدمة لا تتناسب مع طبيعة الموضوع، الموضوع بصفة عامة يفتقر للانسجام والترابط، الطلاب يعانون من مشكلة كتابة الفقرة، علامات الترقيم والإملاء من المشاكل التي تواجه الطلاب عند كتابة التعبير الجدلي.
