Abstract
WhatsApp has become more popular application for social
networking on which people need to exchanging their personal and
business related information. This information may contain
confidential information that need to be secured from any third
party access.
Although the encryption on whatsapp is widely used nowadays,
and made it very difficult for computer crime experts to find the
user information and conversations, but there are serious problems
while used this encryption as their performance and security.
This research provides evaluation of the performance and security
for Whatsapp encryption algorithms (AES). The performance
measure of AES conducted in terms of encryption time, decryption
time, CPU usage and memory usage for a different text size to
measure the effect of the changing data size. The security measure
conducted on whatsapp of how to access the encrypted WhatsApp
conversations from android device and extract this conversations
and decrypt it and convert it into human readable formats.
This research using some tools as Microsoft Visual Studio.Net
2010 as front end which works in .Net framework version 2.0,
Android debugging bridge, WhatsApp key/DB extractor and
WhatsApp viewer.
This research conclude that there are a large effect on the
performance of Whatsapp encryption algorithms (AES) while
changing data size on encryption time, decryption time, CPU usage
and memory usage. also conclude that we can gain complete access
to all encrypted information on WhatsApp and to all similar social
networking applications such as viber and IMO.
