dc.description.abstract | Abstract Introduction: congenital anomalies can result in long-term disability considerable variation in frequency in different populations has been reported. objectives: To study the patterns and factors associated with congenital anomalies among neonates admitted at two Sudanese neonatal units to provide baseline data for future studies. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive cross sectional hospital based study involving neonates admitted to Omdurman Maternity Hospital, and JAFFERIBNOUF Neonatal intensive care unit 2014-2015 Data were collected using a structured check list and the anomalies classified according to ICD-10(international classification of diseases) and was analyzed using SPSS(Statistical Package for the Social Science) version 21.chi squared and p value calculated with value of 0.05 was set for statistical significant so as to identify factors associated with congenital anomalies. Results: Out of 2986 neonate admitted to Omdurman maternity hospital 252(8.4%)had congenital anomalies while 50 out of 243 (20%) for Jafaar IbnOuf hospital. of the total 302 neonates admitted due to congenital anomalies,86(22.5%)had Central nervous system defects, 53(17.5%)chromosomal, 41(13.6%)Cardiovascular, 36 (12.6%)other congenital anomalies, 35(11.6%) Musculoskeletal, 20(6.6%) Genital system defects, 13(4.4%) Gastrointestinal, 12(4%) Urinary system defects ,9(3%) Respiratory, 7(2.4%) cleft lip and palate,161(54.8%) were males, 128(43.5%)were females and there were different types of congenital anomalies among male and females. Most of the neonates in the study were normal weight (62.3%) and 274(94.5%) were singleton. Conclusion : Sudan prevalence of congenital anomalies of 8.4% is higher than the international figures 3-7%. recommendation: the need of public awareness and mobilization of resources and establishment of programs to cover the need of this special groups.
