Abstract
Abstract
Experiments in chemistry teaching play an important role in helping the
students to acquire mental abilities, skills, and affective aims and in training
them in scientific thinking and methods of scientific research. And
consequently in achieving the main aims of the subject as issued from the
Ministry of Education and in leveling up of education in general.
The researcher carried out this study to investigate the quality and quantity of
experiments included in the chemistry text book for third secondary class in
Sudanese schools to know their role in verifying these aims. He also aimed at
knowing to how extents do the teachers care about these experiments, and
the role of students in it as well as the obstacles that impede carrying it out.
The researcher chose the Government Secondary Schools in Khartoum
Province as a society of his study. He used the descriptive method in his
research.
The researcher analyzed the content of the experiments in the text to
learnable experiences. Then he wrote every experience in a behavioral
operational objective. Then he turned to the list of the main aims linking every
aim in it with a number of behavioral objectives showing their role in
implementing this main aim. Then pointing out the main aims which cant be
acquired through the experiments.
The researcher used two questionnaires, one for the teachers and supervisors
of chemistry, the other for the students to know their ideas about the standard
of carrying out the experiments in their schools, and the role of these
experiments in achieving the objectives in the cognitive, psychomotor and
affective domains.
Unanimity of opinion was shown by the teachers and students towards the
importance of experiments in achieving the main aims of the subject, if these
experiments were carried out. But the standard in which it is done in schools is
very low and the participation of students in it is under the required standard,
which implies that its objectives are not verified. Also the differences between
male and female teachers and that between the teachers when classified
according to years of experience show no clear statistical significance.
The researcher concluded that in the verification of the objectives of chemistry
through experiments, the teacher needs to be supplied with a definite list of
objectives linked with the experiments. Also the experiments should be written
in the text book in clear steps, with the addition of more experiments to the
curriculum. Students should carry out some experiments themselves .Labs
must be equipped to play their role.
More researches should be carried out in this field to elevate the level of
practical teaching of the subject and the standard of science curriculum in
general.
