Abstract

Planning for Reclassification of Library Collections : A Case study of Khartoum Library _ Samar Adil Yousuf AL hakeem M. A. Degree » Alneelain University Advisor : Dr Hamad A. Abdelgadir Abstract The purpose of this research was to study the planning for the reclassification of university library collections, both theoretically and empirically , and to draw respective attention to the causes of the need for reclassification in libraries . The researcher employed a system analysis perspective in order to collect and analyze data for discovering administrative and technical obstacles that face the use of different classification schemes by the same library , which finally could compel the library to plan for reclassification of its collection according to one scheme . Khartoum University Library (KUL)was taken as a case study. its reclassification plans and performance were scientifically studied. The results showed that the causes of reclassification included lack of ' ‘ coordination between bibliographic tools and collections, organization based on different classification schemes. The result also indicated that the lack of appropriate information in adequate funding and staff - development would impair the success of a reclassification plan . The researcher concluded by several recommendations covering the parameters of a reclassification plan, and composed an action plan for the reclassification of Khartoum University Library (KUL).
