Effects of Mobile Learning on Academic Achievement and Attitude of Sudanese dental Students

Abstract

ABSTRACT Introduction: great technological development in wireless networks, and mobile devices' already millions of students own, represent a great and powerful tool of learning that can influence education effectively. The research aimed to study the effect of using mobile educational application on the academic achievement and attitude of Sudanese undergraduate dental students. Methods: The participants were allocated randomly into two groups; control and intervention group. Initially, the two groups undertook a test (pre-test) to make sure of standardization of scale regarding their existing academic knowledge. Then the intervention group was provided with a mobile app (dental surgical forceps app), and 3 weeks later a post-test was applied for both groups. The mean score of the intervention group was compared with the control group to find if there was a significant difference (P<0.05). Results: T-test statistical analysis of the mean scores (pre-test and post-test) showed significant difference in the intervention group (P= 0.000), with no significant changes in the control group (P = 0.3). Regarding the attitude of the dental students, the mean scores of the sample indicated that vast majority of the participants (93.5%) responded positively in relation to the effectiveness of m-learning. Conclusion: Our results proved that using mobile educational application was effective regarding gaining and increasing knowledge. The findings also pointed out positive attitudes and response of the dental students toward mobile learning. Recommendation: Medical educators should adopt mobile learning methods and technologies as an adjunct tool to traditional classroom education. Longitudinal design studies are needed to clarify the causal and the retention effects of mobile learning, since it is not clear if the retention of knowledge and skills on a long-term is achievable using mobile learning.)
