Abstract

ABSTRACT The role of social worker in the secondary school stage is of prime significance. This stage is characterized with the adolescent phase which is crucial in multiple facets __ physical, dynamic and social. As such, it requiresthe counseling of someone who can serve as ideal guide in various spheres _ training, vocation and behaviour. His guidance should continuein the personality - building of the adolescent student. Most recent studies demonstrate that this phase of education reflects growing rise in the behavioural deviance. Other educational stages, in comparison, are less prone to delinquent trends. The present study shows the importance of the relative role played by the social worker in educational training and ensuring protection against deviance at the secondary stage. It also shows importance to the relative attention assigned to the concept of delinquency current among secondary school students. In addition, it sheds light on the constraints of the role played by the social worker in ensuring protection against deviant behaviour of the students. Further, it identifies the difficulties and dilemmas that tend to hamper the effective role played by the social worker. Finally, it yields some findings and recommendations conducive to surmount such problems. Pursuant to the reasons contributing to the delinquency among adolescent students at the secondary school stage, the study offers the following as salient: l. Companionship with bad friends outside the school; 2. Companionship with bad friends inside the school; 3. Negligence of parents; 4. Spoiling the sons by the mother and the unkind attitude of the father; 5. Deprivation from daily engagements; and 6. Additional penalty. In addition, some other malicious habits lead to the deviance. The following are important: 1. Non-attendance at school; 2. Smoking; 3. Inadequate conduct both inside or outside school; and 4. Taking drugs by some addicts inside school. In order to enhance the role played by the social worker, the study offers following suggestions. 1. Increased attention on imparting student activities program; 2. Presence of numerous social workers commensurate to the needs of the students; 3. Increased official attention towards the role of social worker; 4. Care of the worker to play social role in an effective form; 5. Consolidation of interactions between social workers and student guardians; and 6. Development of social worker talents through training courses. Among the obstacles encountered by the social workers, the following are noteworthy: 1. Non-pursuance of parents to follow-up the problems of their sons; 2. Lack of attention by the officials; 3. Negative cooperation on the part of family towards school; 4. Weaker persuaton to the student by religious guides; 5. Ambiguity surrounding the role of social worker to the school management; and 6. Deprivation of the worker to exercise authority to render his task. Among the suggestions offered to accomplish the objectives associated with the program ensuring protection to the students against deviance, the following are salient: 1. Implanting the religious values and tenets among students; 2. Cooperation of the parents with the school; 3. End of carelessness towards school regulations and by-laws; and 4. Growing attention by the media on the prevention against deviance. In the end, it deserves to note that the protection of students against deliquency and deviance is possible. It needs committed intent by the social worker and access to needed facilities. The latter will facilitate his task to render his role. Last but not the least, a word may be added. Simple delinquency is an expected reality. It can occur in any setting of the school. 2
