Abstract

Abstract The aim of this research is to study the environmental conditions of Khartoum North industrial area and its dwelling areas in the outskirts. The study has concentrated on whether these areas are suffering from air, water and soil pollution or not, and if any what are the effects on the citizens moreover, the study also aim at measuring environment awareness of the people of these areas concemed. The data for the study are collected as a field study through questionnaires which included these areas: Omer — el — Mukhtar, Khatmia, Tybat -— el — Ahamda besides taking specimens of water and making lab analysis for them. Also taking samples of soils, trees leaves to know the concentration of heavy elements on these. The observations showed that many people arésuffering from the industrial area effects. These bad effects are clearly shown in the nasty smells, fumes, garbage and solid and liquid wastes of the industrial area. This together with the noises the area causes to citizens; the noises coming from machines and heavy traffic. _ The study has also shown that no consideration has been given for extensions of cities" and the increase of population in future, when these industrial areas were set up. The lab. analysis has shown no real danger of water pollution at the present time, but there is a variation of pollution of soil._ ' The lab study has also shown the concentration of lead, copper and iron on these leaves which are also an indications of people suffering firom respiratory diseases. - The study has also come to some recommendations of enviromnental protection and making of routine inspections of factories and keeping an eye on wastes draining of this area. Moreover, growing trees barriers around the industrial areas to protect citizens by reducing air pollution. Furthermore, there must be big people’s enlightenment, through mass media, on how to combat pollution and enviromnent protection.
