Medical Students' Perception of the Educational Environment at Al-Nahda College, 2018

Abstract

Abstract Introduction Educational environment encompasses everything that are found and occurs inside the school of Medicine. It affects the students’ ability to achieve their academic goals, feeling of academic satisfaction and well-being. Assessment of the educational environment of paramount-importance for all stake-holder, administrators and educators in the academic field. Therefore, this study was conducted in Al-Nahda College to measure the student perception towards the educational environment in the college, in order to provide a baseline information about the educational environment to explore areas that need more strengthening and others that need to be sustained. Methods This is an institutional based cross-sectional study conducted in Al-Nahda University College between January and February 2018. Study population were 634 medical students (1st year- 5th year). Dundee Ready Education Environment Measure (DREEM) questionnaire was used as a survey tool for this study. Students’ responses were entered to the computer and analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24 (SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL, USA). Data were displayed as mean (SD) or number (%). Results A (83.9%) pre-clinical and (16.1%) clinical stage participated in this study from all academic levels. Three hundred and sixty (56.9%) were male students, while the rest were female (43.1%). The overall DREEM score in this study is 130 (34.2), which indicates more positive educational environment than negative. Likewise, students’ perception for teachers, Students’ academic self-perception, Students’ perception of atmosphere and Students’ social self-perception. However, students’ perception for learning shows negative indicator. Students’ female gender have significantly higher mean (SD) overall DREEM score than male students [136 (31.5) Vs. 129 (35.5); P= 0.008], respectively. Female scored higher than male in subclass students’ perception for teachers, Students’ academic self-perception and Students’ social self-perception, [28.8 (7.8) Vs. 27.1 (8.5); P= 0.024]; [22.2 (5.6) Vs. 21.0 (7.2); P= 0.017]; [19.8 (4.9) Vs. 18.8 (5.4); P= 0.019], respectively. The foreign students perceived the overall educational environment better than Sudanese students [135.6(31.7) Vs. 131.3 (34.8); P=0.049]. Conclusion The educational environment is perceived positive in Al-Nahda College. Four out of five inventory subscale were perceived positive, while only students’ perception of learning sub-scale was perceived negative. Female students and non-Sudanese students perceived the educational environment better than the male students and Sudanese students. The perception of clinical students did not differ from that of pre-clinical students. Recommendation 1. Enhance faculty training programs. 2. Modify the curriculum to become more students centered. 3. Sustain the extra-curricular activity for the students. 4. Reassess the educational environment after 2 years to assess the impact of the intervention taken by the administration.

مستخلص الدراسة المقدمة البيئة التعليمية تشمل كل ما وجد ويحدث داخل مدرسه الطب. وهو يؤثر علي قدرة الطلاب علي تحقيق أهدافهم الاكاديميه ، والشعور بالرضا الأكاديمي والرفاه. تقييم البيئة التعليمية ذوأهميه قصوى لجميع أصحاب المصلحة في المجال الأكاديمي, إداريين و معلمين في المجال الأكاديمي. ولذلك ، تم إجراء هذه الدراسة في كليه النهضة لتقييم البيئة التعليمية في برنامج الطب والجراحة ، من أجل توفير معلومات أساسيه عن البيئة التعليمية لإستكشاف المناطق التي تحتاج إلى مزيد من التعزيز وغيرها من المجالات التي تحتاج إلى التعزيز. المنهجية هذه دراسة مؤسسية مقطعيه أجريت في كليه النهضة الجامعية بين يناير و فبراير 2018. وكان عدد الدارسين المشاركين من طلاب الطب في جميع المستويات الاكاديميه (السنه الاولي-الخامسة) ما مجموعه 634 طالبا شاركوا في هذه الدراسة. وأستخدم الإستبيان الخاص بتدابير البيئة التعليمية الجاهزة في دندي (DREEM) كأدآة مسح لهذه الدراسة. إستجابات الطلاب تم إدخالها علي الكمبيوتر وتحليلها بإستخدام الحزمة الإحصائيه للعلوم الإجتماعية (SPSS) الإصدار 24 (spss inc. شيكاغو ، إلينوي ، الولايات الامريكيه). وتم التعبير عن البيانات بإستخدام الوسط (الإنحراف المعياري) أو رقم (النسبة المئوية %). النتائج نسبة (83.9%) من المرحلة القبل السريرية و (16.1%) من المرحلة السريرية شاركت في هذه الدراسة من جميع المستويات الأكاديميه. وكان 360 (56.9%) من الطلبة الذكور بينما كانت النسبة الباقية من الإناث. مجموع نقاط DREEM في هذه الدراسة هو 130 (34.2) ، الذي يشير إلى بيئة تعليمية أكثر ايجابيه من السلبية. كذلك ، إدراك الطلاب للمعلمين ، و إدراك الطلاب الذاتي الأكاديمي ، و إدراك الطلاب لجو الكلية و إدراك الطلاب الذاتي الإجتماعي. ولكن ، فإن إدراك الطلاب للتعلم أظهر مؤشراً سلبياً. وقد كانت نسبه إدراك الطالبات أعلي بكثير من الطلاب [136 (31.5) مقابل 129 (35.5) ؛ P = 0.008] ، علي التوالي. وسجلت الطالبات أيضا أعلي من الذكور في إدراك طلاب الصف الفرعي للمعلمين ، و الإدراك الذاتي الأكاديمي للطلاب ، و إدراك الطلاب الذاتي الاجتماعي ، [28.8 (7.8) مقابل 27.1 (8.5) ؛ P = 0.024] ؛ [22.2 (5.6) مقابل 21.0 (7.2) ؛ P = 0.017] ؛ [19.8 (4.9) مقابل 18.8 (5.4) ؛ P = 0.019] ، علي التوالي. ويري الطلاب الأجانب أن البيئة التعليمية العامة بصورة أفضل من الطلاب السودانيين [135.6 (31.7) مقابل 131.3 (34.8) ؛ P = 0.049]. الخاتمة تعتبر البيئة التعليمية بشكل عام إيجابيه في كليه النهضة. وأعتبر أن أربعه من أصل خمسه من الجدول الفرعي للتقييم إيجابيه ، في حين أن إدراك الطلاب لمستوي التعلم الفرعي يعتبر سلبيا. وتعتبر الطالبات وكذلك الطلاب غير السودانيين أن البيئة التعليمية أفضل من الطلاب الذكور والطلاب السودانيين. لم يختلف إدراك الطلاب في المرحلة السريرية عن الطلاب الذين كانوا في المرحله ما قبل السريرية. التوصيات 1. تعزيز برامج تدريب أعضاء هيئه التدريس. 2. تعديل المنهج الدراسي ليصبح تركز أكثر على الطالب . 3. الحفاظ علي النشاط خارج المناهج الدراسية للطلاب. 4. إعاده تقييم البيئة التعليمية بعد سنتين علي الأقل لتقييم أثر التدخل الذي قامت به الإداره.
