dc.description.abstractAbstract This research tackled the motives of criminal behavior and their relationship with psychological stability and self-esteem among prison inmates in Khartoum State. The researcher used the descriptive correlational method, and the sample consisted of (350) prison imnates (247) males from the Federal Jail — Khartoum North and (103) females from Omdunnan women prison. They were selected according to stratified random sample. The research devices comprised: . l. Scale for measuring motives of criminal behavior designed by the researcher. 2. Psychological stability inventory designed by the researcher. 3. Self-esteem scale constructed by the researcher. The researcher used the following statistical formula to analyze the collected data: 1. Pearson’s linear correlation between score of each item with the total score of the psychological tests. 2. Extreme comparison to test coefficients of discrimination for the inventories. 3. Alpha Cronbach coefficient and spearman Brown for reliability. T—test for one sample to measure the general trait of the psychometric tools. Man Witney test to verify the significance of differences on criminal behavior motives attributed to gender/inmate classification. One way (ANOVA) to test the significance of differences on crime motives attributed to the type of crime (money / persons / sexual / etc.). Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient to examine the correlation between crime motives and educational level. The following were results obtained: Supremacy of economic motives was high among motives of criminal 4 behavior but supremacy of psychological, social and political motives was below average. Prison inmates in Khartoum state were characterized by lower psychological stability. Prison inmates in Khartoum state were characterized by lower self-esteem. i There was positive correlation between economic motives of the crime and psychological stability among inmates but there was negative correlation between political motives of the crime and psychological stability and weak non-significant correlation between psychosocial motives and psychological stability among inmates. 5. No. correlation was found between crime motives and self- esteem among inmates. 6. There was significant positive correlation between psychological stability and self-esteem. ._ 7. No significant statistical differences on crime motives attributed to gender variable. »8. There were significant statistical differences on crime motives among inmates attributed to the type of crime. 9. No significant statistical differences were found on motives of criminal behavior among inmates attributed to inmate classification (recurrent — first time). 10. There was negative correlation between criminal motives and inmate’s educational level. The results were interpreted and the research was concluded by the set of recommendations based on the results obtained and set of suggestions for future studies.en_US
