Abstract

ABSTRACT smoking is one of risk factor for human health and it`s found to be associated with a low bone mass and an increased risk of osteoporotic fracture and many diseases. Objective: cross sectional study conducted to evaluate serum calcium, phosphorus levels and ALP activity among habitual smokers in Khartoum State. Eighty subjects were enrolled in this study and classified into 40 habitual healthy male smokers as case group and 40 habitual healthy male non-smokers as control group, aged between 18 to 40 years old. Results: there is no correlation between calcium and study variables (age, BMI, duration of smoking, cigarette per day) with p-value (0.367, 0.695, 0.155, 0.304) respectively no correlation between phosphorus and study variables (age, BMI, duration of smoking, cigarette per day) with p-value (0.414, 0.105, 0.711, 0.318) respectively There is no significant difference in mean concentration of calcium, phosphorus, and ALP between smokers and non smokers with p-value (0.974, 0.198, 0.846) respectively, and in contrast there is negative correlation between ALP and age with p-value (0.040) and no correlation with (BMI, duration of smoking, cigarette per day) with p-value (0.588, 0.581, 0.329) respectively conclusion: in this study we concludes that, light smoking has no effect in mean concentration of calcium, phosphorus and ALP among smokers and non smokers and there is negative correlation between age and ALP.
