Abstract
The intellectual contribution of the faculty staff members is the most
important aspect of measuring progress and development of staff members,
but there are many factors that affect the intellectual contribution of staff
members in Sudanese universities. This study attempts to identify the
magnitude of that contribution and the factors affecting it, and then provide
information that contributes to their promotion and their development. The
University of Khartoum, Sudan University of Science and Technology,
Omdurman Islamic University, University of Neelain, and the University of
Al-Zaeem Azhari has been selected as public universities in Khartoum State
to conduct this study, being of the same the nature. The shared colleges
between these universities under study were specified which are the faculties
of: engineering, agricult1_1re,_and laboratories, education, trade and economic
and social studies. The study resorted to the descriptive analytical survey
method for a stratified random sample of staff members of these universities
ranking as Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Professors.
The main hypotheses of the research are that:
l. There is a decline in the level of intellectual contribution to Sudanese
universities staff members.
2. There is no statistically significant correlation between the intellectual
contribution of faculty members and their varying personal attributes (age,
gender, marital status, academic degree, qualifications).
3. There is no statistically significant correlation between the intellectual
contribution of staff members and work enviromnent in the universities.
4. There is no statistically significant correlation between the intellectual
contribution of staff members and the type and amount of training they
receive.
5. There is no correlation between the size of the intellectual contribution of
staff members and their number in Sudanese universities.
The study found that there was a decline in the level of intellectual
contribution of staff members in universities in the Sudan, illustrating that the
contribution of over two-thirds of respondents from the staff members was
not acceptable. The study also showed a statistically significant relationship
between the intellectual contribution of faculty members and each of: The
staff members gender, the university in which he works, his administrative
responsibilities in the university, sabbatical leave for scientific research, the
criteria used to evaluate performance, the way the staff member got his last
scientific degree, the type of college that employs the member, whether the
staff member received intemal training during his university service or not in:
promotion and development of staff members; or any specialized training
other than this, and the numbers of staff members in universities.
Moreover, the study showed that there is no statistically significant
relationship between the intellectual contribution of faculty members and
each of: the competition for publishing in international scientific magazines,
consultant offices for scientific research and statistics provided to teachers to
help organize and analyze data, and the existence of a plan for scientific
research in the universities, teaching load of the professor, the promotion
system and its relationship with academic accomplishment, the importance of
scientific research for promotion, the yearly calendar of the staff member, the
conditions of supervision in postgraduate studies, and the standard of
administrative leadership in the university, the in service training of staff
members in: writing genuine scientific research; computer science; statistical
analysis; management, lack of experience in genuine research writing, non-
proficiency in foreign languages, lack of proficiency in the use of technology
and its utilization in the field of research, inability to use mathematical and
statistical methods, lack of training that develops performance in research,
writing and translation, and the number of training courses.
Therefore, the study recommends hard effort and persistent work to upgrade
the level of intellectual contribution of staff members, and to overcome the
difficulties, and in particular the provision of necessary funding, the reduction
of brain drain, giving more attention to the promotion and development of
staff members and expanding training opportunities for them, and expanding
the exchange of experiences with regional and international universities
