Representation of Women in NgugiwaThiong'o's A Grain of Wheat

Abstract

Abstract Different African writers at different places and times have investigated the situation of women in their social, political and religious contexts. But many of these writers and novelists like Ngugi have tried to highlight the importance of the positive role of the women and solve their problems through the same means and reasons behind which they are captured. This study is to shed light on the origin and the core point from which all the challenges and problems that women face come out, it's considering them as female anywhere, anytime and under all conditions is the issue. The researcher has collected data through deep reading and qualitative analysis which has led to unveil the point and the way by which Ngugi weaken and impress women while he wants to stand with and support them by the wrong Tools and Means. Through the deep reading and critical text analysis the researcher comes to the following findings: First, women in (A grain of wheat) are severely considered as a source of problems and treated as females rather than humans. Second, they are represented as weak and green to the extent that prevent themfrom doing, being or in depend from men. Finally, probably women in (A Grain of Wheat) have supported the MauMau fighters, but the support itself indicatestheir marginal situation and lack of independence. Because the one who creates the event and stands as a doer isthe most important as the base and the others are secondary and less important. For this the researcher proves that the points which Ngugi used to emphasis the strength and equality of women with their encounters are weakness points rather than strength points. So this pointsare not enough to approve the jamb of the women in the novel to the top of the stair of the rights and be exactly equal to the men. Counting that even the help they provide is not through their natural hobbies but by using their female characteristics which are the main source of their injustice and marginalization. AbstractAbstract (Arabic version) في أوقات وأماكن مختلفة تناول الكتاب الأفارقة وضع المرأة في سياقاتهم الاجتماعية والسياسية والدينية ولكن الكثير من هؤلاء الكتاب والروائيون أمثال انقوقي حاولوا تسليط الضوء على أهمية دور المرأة في السياقات المختلفة وحل مشكلاتها بذات الآليات والأسباب التي بها ومن أجلها قمعت المرأة وحوصرت. ألقت هذه الدراسة الضوء على النقطة الأولى التي تمثل الأصل الذي منه تتداعى كل إشكاليات المرأة في كينيا وإفريقيا ككل. وتكمن المسألة في اعتبار أن المرأة أنثى في كل مكان وزمان وفي كل الأحول والأوضاع.تمكن الباحث عبر التحليل النصي والاستنباط من كشف الستار عن الطريقة التي عرض بها الروائي أنقوقي المرأة في روايته (حبة قمح) حين أراد إنصافها ودعمها عبر الآليات والوسائل الخاطئة. فمن خلال القراءة والتحليل النقدي المستمرين توصل الباحث إلى النتائج التالية: أولاً: أن النساء في رواية (حبة قمح) أظهرن كمصدر للمشاكل أكثر من أي شيء آخر، كما أنهن صورن كأنثوات لا كإنسانات وهذا هو أس المشكلة. ثانياً: تم عرضهن كشخصيات يبطن الضعف والهشاشة للدرجة التي لا تسعفهن للعمل بعيداً عن الرجال أو الاستقلال عنهم. أخيراً وليس آخراً ربما ساندت المرأة الثوار ببعض الطرق لكن تلك المساندة نفسها توحي بالتبعية والهامشية لأن الذي يصنع الحدث ويقوم مقام الفاعل هو المهم والأصل وما دونه ثانوي وقليل الأهمية، وبهذا اعتبر الباحث النقاط التي أكد بها أنقوقي قوة ومساواة المرأة بقرينها أنما هي نقاط ضعف أكثر من كونها نقاط قوة وبالتالي هي ليست كافية لتأكيد قفز النساء في الرواية إلى قمة سلم الحقوق والمساواة مع أقرانهن وخصوصاً أن المساعدات التي قدمتها نفسها لم تكن عبر استخدام ملكاتهن الطبيعية بل عبر خصائصهن الأنثوية التي هي مصدر الضعف والحصار
